JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Department Head of Computer Science, to start in the Fall of 2022.

JOB DESCRIPTION

The Department Head of Computer Science is expected to provide long-term visionary leadership; nurture and enhance existing departmental strengths in research; maintain the highest level of quality in undergraduate and graduate programs; attract, mentor, and retain top faculty and staff; formulate and execute a strategic plan for diversity, equity, and inclusion; work collaboratively with members of the department and other departments and offices across WPI; develop external collaborations with other academic institutions and industry; and elevate the department's national and international recognition.

Candidates must have the following qualifications:
  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related area.
  • A proven record of excellence in teaching, research, and service. Research expertise is expected to enhance current departmental strengths.
  • A proven record of academic administrative leadership, ideally including evidence of leadership related to interdisciplinary initiatives in computing.
  • A proven record of commitment to and success in increasing diversity, equity, and inclusion in computer science.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal and communication skills.
About the Department

Founded in 1969, the Computer Science Department at WPI is a collegial department consisting of 35 full-time faculty, 29 of whom are tenured/tenure-track. The department's research areas include artificial intelligence, machine/deep learning, cybersecurity, algorithms, databases, graph theory, software engineering, mobile computing, computer graphics, programming languages, computer networks, formal methods, visualization, human-centered computing, and computer science education, among others. The CS faculty are deeply involved in WPI interdisciplinary programs in data science, robotics, interactive media and game development, bioinformatics and computational biology, learning sciences and technology, and neuroscience. The Computer Science Department has close to 900 undergraduate majors and 150 graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) students. Including the CS-related interdisciplinary programs, there are over 1300 undergraduate and 500 graduate students majoring in computing-related degree programs at WPI.

Faculty research is supported by the NSF, NIH, DoE, and other federal and private funding sources with recent annual new research funding averaging $14 million. The CS Department is part of the vibrant School of Arts & Sciences at WPI. In January 2022, some of the CS-related interdisciplinary programs, their faculty, students, and research labs will move to a brand-new, 100,000-square-foot, $80 million state-of-the-art academic and research building that will foster and enhance interdisciplinary collaboration across campus.
