The Cancer Vaccine Institute is seeking an experienced scientist to lead our Immunologic Monitoring Core Laboratory. This person should be skilled in personnel management and act as an expert resource in immunologic assay execution for a multi-disciplinary group. The position will be responsible for reviewing research and recommending specific technology and methodology, designing technological phases of research projects and researching and developing new technology to meet the overall objectives of the Cancer Vaccine Institute. The position requires a strong regulatory background and experience in clinical assay execution and development. The scientist will develop hypotheses and draw conclusions based on expertise in technology used in research, perform basic data analysis, present research results at meetings and write methodological sections of grant proposals. The position will be responsible for direct, day-to-day supervision of research staff in the Immunologic Monitoring Core including making hiring decisions, employee performance reviews and disciplinary actions as needed. The position will be responsible for monitoring research staff skills, teaching new skills when needed, and developing laboratory skills orientation classes/seminars for incoming MD/Fellows on technologies used by the Cancer Vaccine Institute. This position will also oversee communications regarding sample handling and processing with external collaborators and clinical trial sites.
General Duties:Duties include preparation and maintenance of laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments and other equipment
Order reagents and keep track of laboratory supplies
Prepare PBMC or purified NK or T cell populations from whole blood
Cryopreservation and thawing of cells
Perform multiparameter flow cytometry and identify cytokine-producing T cells using intracellular staining
Perform cytokine ELISPOT assays
Stimulate and culture primary cells in vitro for up to several months
Conduct ELISA/Luminex assays to measure cytokine production
Perform lymphoproliferative assays and cytolytic killing assays
Record keeping, data collection and analysis
Interpret results and recommend modification of procedures as necessary
Present data in lab meetings as well as to external groups through the creation of reports, papers, and formal presentations
Read literature related to research projects
Create new plans to assist in the development of new protocols and procedures for testing immune responses
Perform validation of new assays
Contribute to writing of Standard Operating Procedures
Assist with library research and clerical work
Interact with and assist clinical personnel with logistical issues regarding collection and shipping of human samples to the lab
Communication and TeambuildingPromote and contribute to the development of teamwork in the service and working relationships between the laboratory and other departments;
Form productive working relationships with co-workers. Communicate clearly, directly and on a timely basis;

Additional Requirements:Knowledge of current immunology literature
Experience in cellular immunology and tissue culture, including preparation of PBMC, flow cytometry, and ELISPOT
Industry and/or clinical experience related to developing CLIA-certified procedures and methodologies strongly preferred
Excellent computer, organizational, and record keeping skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills; including ability to write and present data orally
Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively within an established team environment
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.DESIREDASCP certification preferred
BSMT preferred
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT The Cancer Vaccine Institute is located at the UW Medicine at South Lake Union campus in a translational research environment that includes laboratory, clinical research and administrative office areas. Work is typically deadline driven and requires a high level of accuracy, extensive communication with scientists, staff and external collaborators from diverse backgrounds. Work week occasionally exceeds 40 hours to complete projects or meet deadlines.
Must be flexible and able to work evenings, weekends and holidays as necessary
This position may be stressful at times in that there is a constant pressure for quick turnaround time on tests and quality control.
May be required to stand for periods of at least 2 hours at a time
