Job Description
The Department of Applied Physics and Materials Sciences (APMS) invites applications for an instructor position to support its undergraduate programs to begin August 16, 2021. Candidates with backgrounds in physics and material science are invited to apply. This position will teach both lower-division and upper-division undergraduate classes and laboratories in the Physics. There is no research workload or expectation associated with this teaching position. This position is a one year appointment. The duty location is the Flagstaff Mountain Campus.
Applied Physics and Materials Science are rapidly developing transdisciplinary fields primarily focused on the application of physical phenomena to technology design and discovery of advanced functional materials. The Department of Applied Physics and Materials Science at Northern Arizona University offers multiple degree paths in these areas including a bachelor's degree in Physics, a bachelor's degree in Physics and Astronomy (astrophysics), a master's degree in Applied Physics, and a doctoral degree in Applied Physics and Materials Science.

Minimum Qualifications

* The minimum qualifications include both an earned Bachelor's degree AND
* An earned Master's OR Ph.D. degree in Physics or a closely-related field, conferred by the start date of employment.

Preferred Qualifications
Include:
(1) a Ph.D. in Physics or a closely related field,
(2) teaching experience at the college or university level, specifically in Physics,
(3) demonstrated experience with instructional design, effective pedagogy, and innovative learning methodologies,
(4) excellent communication skills,
(5) experience working with people from a variety of culturally diverse backgrounds, and
(6) significant professional experience as a physicist in an industry, government, or academic setting.

Background Information
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check.

Salary
$40,000-$48,000 Commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the [Conditions of Faculty Service](http://nau.edu/Provost/Resources-Policies/). Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment.

If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of employment. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following 90 days of employment.
