What You Will Achieve

As a Principal Scientist, you will be at the center of our operations and you'll find that everything we do, every day, is in line with an unwavering commitment to quality. You will be part of a group in Pfizer comprises experts in the major scientific disciplines involved in the discovery and preclinical development of small molecule drugs. Specifically, you will be involved in molecular design, synthesis, computational chemistry, pharmacology, chemical biology, structural biology, analytical chemistry etc.

You will play a key role in large, multi-disciplinary matrix teams from project inception through to delivery of clinical drug candidates. You will also contribute to teams of scientists looking to combine Pfizer's expertise and large-scale research investments, with external academic and biotech collaborations.

In your role, you will be recognized as a technical expert and a significant scientific contributor. With your deep knowledge of the discipline, you will help in revolutionizing our approach in the discovery and development of small molecule and synthetically-derived drugs. You will be using your scientific judgment to adapt standard methods and techniques by applying prior work experience. You will undertake mentoring activities to guide team members.

How You Will Achieve It

  • Contribute at the therapeutic area level and represent the group on multidisciplinary teams.
  • Influence at the therapeutic area or discipline level and increasingly at the project team level.
  • Partner with other team leaders to shape and influence the strategy of medicinal chemistry project{s} through the enablement of innovative synthesis for the delivery of incumbent compounds.
  • Assist development and enablement of versatile and modular synthetic routes compatible with rapid analog synthesis.
  • Build internal/external recognition of the teams and Research Units (RU) through effective communication on project strategies and plans.
  • Seek to deliver project objectives in line with allocated resources under time constraints in collaboration with the Project Team and leadership.
  • Drive the appropriate selection of target compounds with speed to Proof of Concept (PoC).
  • Promote the professional and scientific development of direct reports.
  • Make effective use of both internal & external design resources available to the project team.


Qualifications

Must-Have

  • Bachelor's Degree with 12+ years of experience or PhD with 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience in the application of innovative methodologies for successful execution of highly challenging synthetic chemistry
  • Proven track record of creative thinking as demonstrated by publication, presentation or patent records
  • Understanding of key concepts from relevant partner disciplines including Pharmacology, ADME, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Drug Safety
  • Expert understanding of and contributor to the chemical literature
  • Comprehensive knowledge of established and modern synthetic methodologies
  • Demonstrate effective supervisory skills with strong focus on developing talents and promoting colleague engagement and productivity


Nice-to-Have

  • PhD and 4+ years of relevant experience
  • Prior experience mentoring junior scientists
