Salary
£32,344 to £35,326
Closing date

Ocean and Earth Science are seeking to appoint a full time Researcher in carbon capture and storage to work on an externally funded project (PCO2Min) that will develop carbon mineralisation in peridotite for permanent carbon dioxide storage. The position is based at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton (NOCS), which is located in a purpose-built waterfront campus.

The post will involve conducting laboratory experiments and controlled release pilot field tests into peridotites in Oman, and testing various geochemical techniques for the detection and quantification of CO2-fluid-rock reactions in a geologic reservoir. These will include the use of in situ sensors in boreholes, and the chemical and isotopic analyses of fluid and rock samples.

You will be an experienced researcher with expertise in geology and geochemistry. You should possess a PhD* or MSc in a relevant scientific field, have considerable experience in the analysis of geological samples (groundwater, rocks) and the development of new analytical protocols, have well-developed self and time-management skills and be able to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. You will preferably have field-going and laboratory experience. You will work within the Geochemistry Group in Ocean and Earth Science under the guidance of Prof. Juerg Matter and in close collaboration with other national and international project partners.

Informal enquiries can be made to Professor J. Matter, email: J.Matter@southampton.ac.uk

* Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.
