Closing date
Nov 2, 2021
Applications are invited for the position of Research Fellow to take part in one of the five 'Discovery Projects' funded by the AHRC as part of the Towards a National Collection Programme for three years from December 2021. 'Unpath'd Waters' aims to make maritime heritage data (collections of charts, documents, images, film, oral histories, sonar surveys, seismic data, archaeological investigations and artefacts) more easily accessible to the public. The team at Southampton is led by Professor Fraser Sturt (Archaeology) and Professor Age Chapman (Electronics and Computer Science) and will work on leveraging advances in artificial intelligence to widen search and discovery capabilities across and between collections. This will involve working closely with co-investigators and project partners from the breadth of the heritage sector.

The successful candidate will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in Computer Science or Archaeological Computing.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.

We aim to be an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.
