Part-time 2 days

Location: Central Oxford

We are looking for a junior developer and technical assistant to help us with several projects over the year ahead. We run several busy jobs boards, advertising vacancies at universities around the world, and a new website to map research projects worldwide to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If you have a background in computer science and digital communications and want to work on projects that make a difference to the world, we have a place for you. We are a start-up business working from a small office in the centre of Oxford and most of the team walk or cycle to work each day.

To enjoy this role you will need an interest, and some basic skills, in front-end web development and UX, alongside practical coding skills and a great deal of energy. This is a varied development and maintenance position where a recent graduate can achieve a great deal of personal responsibility as part of a very supportive, but largely non-technical, team. You will be learning on the job because there are rarely textbook answers to the problems we need to solve, your adaptability and research will be as important as your technical skills. A busy day in our office will generate many immediate small technical questions and tasks, as well as work on larger development projects, so project management and prioritisation is an important part of the role. Project management training can be provided for the successful applicant.

The position will include the following work in the year ahead:
  1. Continuing development work and maintenance work on our new website at www.theglobalacademy.ac
  2. Project management and design input, working with external contractors to maintain and develop our main jobs site at https://www.globalacademyjobs.com/ .
  3. In-house website maintenance and development work for https://blog.globalacademyjobs.com/category/all-articles/ This is the Wordpress blog site that runs our social media marketing work.
  4. Further development of our Python-based web importer systems to deliver data to the jobs site and the Global Academy database. This is a critical system for our online jobs board and requires patience and perseverance as well as technical know-how.
  5. If you have interests in broader digital marketing tools can also undertake some Digital Marketing strategy and delivery work, including Google Analytics, electronic direct mail and social media.

Requirements:
  • Advanced IT skills
  • Knowledge of Python coding. You will need to learn to use Selenium Webdriver and Beautiful Soup
  • Understanding of Git version control
  • An interest in learning to develop a website using an opensource CMS
  • Sufficient HTML skills to design and post a basic webpage
  • MS Office skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Willingness and ability to learn
  • Interest in digital media and/or advertising will be an advantage
  • The ability to work both as a member of a team and as an individual contributor.

For everyone on our team further languages, in addition to good written and spoken English, are valuable in working with our university clients who are spread across 80 countries worldwide. We also work hard to maintain a diverse team who bring different points-of-view and experiences to our business. We value good humour and collaboration, as well as hard work, and we keep regular office hours.

This is a part-time role starting at 2 days per week. The role is based at our office with flexible hours to accommodate your university schedule.

We are an Oxford living wage employer and will offer £10.50 an hour to the right candidate. We provide 22 days of paid leave each year (FTE), plus public holidays and pension contributions.

Please note we are only accepting applications from those based in Oxford, UK.

Candidates must have the right to work in the UK, we cannot sponsor visas but several overseas students have enjoyed their time working with us.

Salary and benefits
  • £10.50 per hour
  • Stunning riverside central Oxford location. Good public transport links. No parking nearby so our waistlines and carbon footprints all stay small
  • Supportive environment with space for professional growth and scope for personal projects
  • Amazing variety of tea, coffee, biscuits and cake in our small, friendly office. We try to keep the fruit bowl full too, to balance out all the cake.
