Requirements

Candidates with experience in the field of academic staff development would be an advantage. Proven track record of administration, management and leadership roles required. Experience of fund-raising required. Proven experience in student development and support. Proven mentoring and supervision experience.

Associate Professor Level

A PhD in the field of Media Management; Journalism and Media Studies; and Journalism and Cultural Studies, is required. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and post graduate levels is required. Research supervision of PGDips and Master's students to completion required. Supervision of PhD students would be an advantage.

Senior Lecturer Level

A PhD in the field of Media Management; Journalism and Media Studies; Journalism and Cultural Studies. In exceptional circumstances, a Master's degree in the above disciplines may be considered where the experience is exceptional. Teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate level is required for those with academic experience. Sufficient training and/or mentorship in the workplace for those with no academic experience. Research supervision of PGDips and Masters' degrees would be an advantage, where no research supervision, experience of mentorship of others required.

Please note that this appointment will be made in line with the requirements of the Employment Equity Act of RSA and the University's recruitment and selection policies and equity strategies. The initial focus will be on equity candidates.

In terms of Immigration Legislation (Act No. 13 of 2002 & Regulations), international staff members (non-SA citizens) have to comply with the provisions of the Act. This therefore means that the period of employment to non-SA citizens will be guided by the validity period of the work permit. In line with legislation governing employment of foreign nationals, employment contracts will be offered on the basis that a development plan would be implemented for the transfer of skills to a South African resident. The onus is on candidates to ensure that they are in possession of a valid work permit before the commencement of employment at the University, failing which the employment with Rhodes University will be terminated.

Remuneration

Senior Lecturer Level:

Basic salary: R567 510 per annum

Approximate cost to company: R804 358 per annum

Associate Professor Level:

Basic salary: R675 414 per annum

Approximate cost to company: R954 203 per annum
