Senior Lecturer

The Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics situated in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Stellenbosch
University, seeks to hire, jointly with the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking, a Senior Lecturer with a focus on tuberculosis biomarker discovery and
generation of biological insights from high-throughput patient cohort and animal model datasets to contribute to improved diagnosis, treatment monitoring, host directed
therapy, vaccine development and disease prevention. The position will be a joint appointment without end date and subject to future funding between the School of Data
Science and Computational Thinking and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, where the majority of the duties will lie with the Division of Molecular Biology and
Human Genetics.
The Division of Molecular Biology and Human Genetics, with more than 20 senior scientists, has a world-class research programme in tuberculosis, is funded by numerous
grants from international granting agencies and is home to the South African Tuberculosis Bioinformatics Initiative (SATBBI). The incumbent will work with the members of,
and take a leadership position in, SATBBI. The incumbent will report to the head of SATBBI.
The School for Data Science and Computational Thinking was launched in July 2019 with a vision to be a world-class institution for data science and computational thinking
in and for Africa. Its mission includes facilitating collaborative research, offering modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, and to attract both private and
public funds to stimulate data science and computational thinking-related research at the University. More information about the School is available on our webpage, at

Researching and publishing in tuberculosis biomarker discovery and generation of biological insights from high-throughput patient cohort and animal model datasets
Supervising postgraduate students;
Analysing a variety of high-throughput data sets, taking responsibility for data preparation and the reports;
Teaching short courses;
Creating opportunities for the staff and students of the School for Data Science and Computational Thinking from mathematical and computer sciences to
Writing grant applications to national and international agencies promoting local expertise in Data Science;
Facilitating obtaining institutional training grants for postgraduate students;
Participating in the School's and Department's consulting activities;
Fulfilling administrative roles as required by the Department and the School, including being the point person representing the School in Departmental activities and
An MBChB and a PhD in a data science field;
Experience in applying Data Science in the context of molecular biology and human genetics;
Experience in using at least one of the statistical programming languages;
Demonstrated leadership of a research or technical team;
Demonstrable excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Proven ability to foster cross-disciplinary relationships;
Track record of successful postgraduate supervision;
A rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF);
Evidence of ongoing national and international collaboration;
Fluency in R using the tidy verse paradigm;
Experience of working in a multidisciplinary research environment.
