Environmental Management, Sciences Department- Adjunct Faculty

University of Maryland Global Campus (UMGC) seeks adjunct faculty to teach online in the Environmental Management program. We are interested in scholar practitioners who want to share their experience and knowledge in the environmental field with non-traditional students spanning the range of environmental management from pollution prevention, auditing, technologies, ecology, communications, and land, water, and air quality management. We want environmental managers who want to engage with continual learning and has expertise to teach the following courses -

Environmental and Natural Resources Economics (ENVM 650) - An introduction to microeconomic principles as they relate to the efficient use of environmental resources and their impact on local, national, and global environmental policies. Topics include an overview of microeconomic principles and economic efficiencies, market failures, externalities, property rights, pollution damage and abatement costs, benefit and cost analysis, valuation methods, environmental policy analysis, federal control policies, and international issues.

Principle of Air Quality Management (ENVM 652) - An overview of management techniques for addressing air quality issues and managing air quality programs. Topics include air pollution law; air pollutants and their sources; effects of air pollution on health and welfare; sampling and analysis of air pollutants; standards, regulations, and enforcement systems; and quality assurance principles.

Land Use Management (ENVM 653) - An introduction to the powers, process, and practice of managing the patterns and land use implications of human settlement and the built environment. Topics include where to build, where not to build, how to build, and when to build. Discussion also covers the settlement history of the United States, as well as the constitutional and legislative mandates for government, private-sector participants, and institutions that shape land use policy. Emphasis is on the role of local government. Land use and environmental community planning, as well as best practices in land use management, are examined.

Required Education and Experience

• Masters degree in environmental health, sustainability, environmental engineering, ecology and earth sciences, environmental policy, or a related field from an accredited institution of higher learning. PhD or other terminal degree preferred.
• Professional experience in the environmental field, including air quality management.
• Certifications as QEP (Qualified Environmental Professional), CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist), CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or other environmental management-related certification are a plus.
• Experience teaching adult learners online and in higher education is strongly preferred

Your role as an adjunct faculty member will be to:

• Actively engage students through frequent interaction that motivates them to succeed, and conveys a genuine energy and enthusiasm for their learning.
• Guide students in active collaboration and the application of their learning in problem- and project-based learning demonstrations.
• Provide rich and regular constructive feedback, utilizing rubrics effectively for the assessment of student work, and acknowledging student accomplishments.
• Demonstrate relevant and current subject-matter expertise, and help students connect concepts across their academic program.
• Provide feedback to your program chair and course chair on possible curricular improvements.
