Abbott Vascular provides innovative, minimally invasive and cost-effective products for treatment of vascular disease. Our extensive portfolio includes drug-eluting stents, bare metal stents, guide wires, balloon dilatation catheters, imaging catheters and software, vessel closure devices and peripheral stents. Our location in Temecula, CA or Santa Clara CA currently has an opportunity for a Principal Scientist/Engineer.

Job Purpose:

This position requires academic training in organic chemistry, polymer science or a related field and will work closely with R&D Mechanical Engineers, Process Engineers, and Analytical Chemists. This scientist or engineer will provide technical leadership and guidance towards the successful design and testing of bioresorbable devices, as well as assist in material selection and characterization of polymeric components in other devices. The ideal candidate will excel in polymer chemistry, structure-property relationships, and material characterization. Additional job responsibilities will be to analyze root causes of a wide variety of failures related to issues arising in design, development, manufacturing, and/or use of Abbott products, support regulatory filings related to biomaterials, and design and execute studies on in vitro and in vivo biodegradation of the devices.

WHAT YOU'LL DO
  • Independently initiate and lead technical projects pertaining to polymeric device programs. Determine the course of action and assemble a team to resolve issues.
  • Determine clear and specific priorities on the development strategy for new products.
  • Be responsible for writing and coordinating biomaterial sections of regulatory submissions.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional departments, including process engineering, manufacturing, quality, pre-clinical, clinical, and regulatory, to identify and coordinate contracts with external consultants and/or academic advisors on product development and process optimization.
  • Identify the training needs or competency gaps for the department and/or product development team and initiate/arrange associated training across Santa Clara and Temecula.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU'LL BRING

Required
  • Masters or PhD degree in Chemistry, Polymer Sciences or related field with over 10 years of experience in polymer chemistry, processing, product development, or manufacturing. Experience with FDA regulations is required. Understanding of material biocompatibility is a plus.
