The National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) is seeking exceptional individuals to provide visible, dynamic and effective senior clinical leadership, direction and oversight for the NIHR CRN, both internally and externally, working closely with the CRN Medical Director.

As one the NIHR CRN Deputy Medical Directors, you will engage with the wider NIHR, Higher Education Institutes and NHS organisations, particularly clinicians, to maximise reach, impact and delivery of the CRN and its initiatives, driving forward business change management in the NHS, public health and social care sectors to support the CRN.

You will lead the CRN National Specialty Leads in the strategic formation and delivery of cross-cutting, multidisciplinary programmes and projects, and work creatively to engage thought leaders across academic, commercial and charity sectors, as well as with Medical Royal Colleges and Specialist Societies.

Working in conjunction with the Medical Director, you will oversee the development, management and delivery of all clinical leadership and engagement components of the NIHR CRN, including leading or contributing to cross-Directorate programmes and projects within CRN Coordinating Centre. Your role will include strategic leadership for a programme of NHS Engagement - helping the NHS and Social Care, recognise the importance of research in best patient care, which is a key strategic objective for the NIHR, maximising CRN reach, impact and delivery of its support for research.

The NIHR CRN Deputy Medical Directors are pivotal national roles that support the NIHR CRN Medical Director and are important, high-profile national leadership roles. You will act as an ambassador for the NIHR CRN, with gravitas and the ability to command the respect of the senior clinical stakeholders in public sector, charity and commercial funding organisations.

You will be an experienced, strategic clinical leader with experience in leading highly talented clinicians to deliver effectively to goals and targets. The CRN is complex, diverse and ambitious, and you must be able to work flexibly and effectively in a developing organisation, to manage change and to support others to deliver measurable results that make the NIHR CRN vision a reality.

You will be seconded to the University of Leeds for the delivery of this role and your organisational base will be the NIHR CRN Coordinating Centre. This role is available at 0.5 FTE until 31st March 2024. You will report to the CRN Medical Director, who in turn reports to the CRN Chief Executive Officer (CEO). The CRN CEO reports to the University Vice Chancellor through the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

Responsibilities of these posts are national, and the post will involve substantial national travel and possibly some international travel. You will be required to frequently visit and attend meetings at the NIHR Clinical Research Network offices in Leeds, London and elsewhere. At a time of COVID-19 pandemic, any travel is subject to the restrictions and conditions of the employer (University of Leeds), local authorities and government, and the health and safety of staff members is the foremost consideration.
