Professor of Animation - Assistant or Associate rank

The UCLA Department of Film, Television & Digital Media (FTVDM) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor of Film, Television and Digital Media with a specialization in Animation starting in Fall 2022. We seek candidates with the potential for exceptional research and demonstrated excellence in teaching, who will actively contribute to the diversity of viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, experiences and practices in FTVDM.

Candidates should be prepared to teach courses in the core graduate and undergraduate curricula of the UCLA Animation Workshop and to participate in shaping the graduate specialization to support connections among MFA students across programmatic areas within the department. Candidates with evidence of successful teaching and mentoring of students at the graduate or undergraduate level are preferred. Prior experience with -- or demonstrated capacity to pursue -- innovations in pedagogy, curriculum design, and expanding student creativity is also desired. Preference will be given to candidates with demonstrated experience or capacity for assisting with program administrative service.

Candidates should be familiar with the history and critical theory of animation, as well as current practices of animation within the broader context of media arts and narrative filmmaking. The successful applicant will bring an expansive approach to animation with an understanding of the fundamentals of 2D and 3D animation (e.g. layout, acting, timing, character design), narrative storytelling, and the ability to creatively integrate traditional techniques with emerging technologies and platforms. The candidate should be able to teach a variety of beginning and advanced studio courses including 2D and 3D concepts, compositing, visual effects, motion graphics, and animation for interactive, mobile and immersive environments (VR/AR/XR). Experience with interdisciplinary collaboration and work that spans multiple domains (film, television, games, immersive media) is a plus.

We are especially interested in candidates whose work demonstrates awareness of and engagement with issues of contemporary social, political and cultural significance. Candidates will be expected to actively contribute to the pursuit of diversity, equity and inclusion in the department. This includes a diversity of viewpoints, cultural backgrounds, and experiences/practices of the department as well as a firm and demonstrated track record of commitment to equity and inclusion.

Candidates must have an MFA or other terminal degree in film, animation, games, digital arts or a related field or at least 3 years of professional experience. Industry experience and/or evidence of individual artistic achievement is required. Preference will be given to candidates who can be hired at the advanced Assistant or early career Associate level. Candidates applying at Associate level must qualify for appointment with tenure in the University of California. The Department of Film, Television & Digital Media is dedicated to both scholarly research and creative practice and UCLA is classified as an R1 Doctoral University with very high research activity.

Full consideration will be given to applications received by November 15 2021. Open until filled. To apply, please submit a CV, cover letter, Statement on Contributions to Diversity, digital portfolio, and names and contact information for three references.
