Job Description
Reporting to the President, the Vice President for Research (VPR) is a university leader who is also responsible for the strategic advancement of research and scholarly activity at Idaho State University. As part of the senior leadership team, the VPR works closely with all levels of management (deans, chairs, principal investigators and center/institute directors), faculty and student governance, staff councils, regional centers, and national labs to enhance research initiatives in support of the university’s academic missions. The position requires a leader who demonstrates that leadership focused on creating a culture of trust, compassion, stability, and hope will result in an environment where employees thrive, where innovation can flourish, and where productivity, positivity and job satisfaction all intersect.

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Contribute to leadership of the university invested in the continued success of every aspect of the university’s mission
  • Elevate research activities in support of the institution’s academic mission through effective and visionary leadership
  • Coordinate research and creative activities and enhance collaboration across the University and with regional partners, serving as both an impetus and manager of change
  • Coordinate and foster increased joint research efforts with ISU’s in-state sister institutions
  • Engage key leadership within ISU to explore interdisciplinary research opportunities, including institutional-wide research affiliations/memberships, and private/public partnerships
  • Coordinate research initiatives involving state, federal, and private stakeholders
  • Provide leadership in attracting and positioning new faculty hires as strong contributors to ISU’s research and creative activities mission, including participating in the oversight and management of effective investments in start-up funding
  • Promote intellectual property and innovation development across all campuses of the institution
  • Align the university’s research priorities with workforce needs at the local, state, and national/global levels
  • Foster economic development by increasing the tie between ISU research functions and the needs of business and industry
  • Foster professional development opportunities for graduate students related to research, ethics, funding, and training
  • Support an environment and culture within the University that facilitates, encourages, inspires, and enhances research and creative activities across the university and for graduate and undergraduate students
  • Demonstrate an appreciation for the integration of the instructional and research missions of the university
  • Promote a culture that values equity and inclusion, service, collaboration, active listening, transparency, and the ability to balance priorities in service with the larger educational and research initiatives of the institution.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate, or equivalent, from an accredited institution
  • A distinguished record of scholarship that would support an appointment to the academic rank with tenure
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including experience with servant leadership
  • Experience providing strategic, innovative, and operational leadership to a comprehensive research enterprise
  • A commitment to creating and fostering a positive culture of trust, compassion, stability, and hope within the institution
  • Dedication to creating an environment of mutual accountability for the wellbeing of the entire university
  • Effective multidisciplinary engagement
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated record of productive relationships with a variety of funding entities
