Minimum Qualifications:

1) An earned doctorate (Ph.D.) in Asian/Asian American Studies, Ethnic or Gender Studies, Disability Studies, Arts Education or a relevant discipline in the Social Sciences or Humanities or closely-related field from an accredited institution (or equivalent) is required; however, applicants nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered. For appointment, the doctorate must be completed by the date of appointment (8/18/2022);
2) Evidence of successful teaching experience at the undergraduate level;
3) Scholarly expertise in critical or socio-cultural studies in transnational Asian studies or the Pacific Islands.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Evidence of research and teaching adopting a transnational, diasporic, interdisciplinary, or comparative perspective on Asia or Pacific Islands. Specific areas of research or teaching may include, but are not limited to: cultural production, literature, media, and the arts, the politics of memory, indigenous communities, gender and sexualities, and urban ethnography;
2) Documented experience with community-engaged research, teaching, and practice with/in Asian or Pacific Island transnational/diasporic communities;
3) Demonstrated evidence of collaborative and team work experience;
4) Evidence of expertise in teaching for social justice and educational equity, emphasizing intersectionality of multiple positionalities that includes, but is not limited to, race, class, gender, sexuality and ability.

Duties:

The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching, research, scholarship and/or creative activity, and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities generally include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses with a focus on transnational/diasporic Asian Studies or Pacific Islands communities, mentor students, engage with Asian and Asian American community partners, actively participate in program and curriculum development, and maintain an active research profile.

Salary:

Initial salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The College:

As the second college of ethnic studies in the nation, the Cal State LA College of Ethnic Studies provides an interdisciplinary intellectual space that centers the histories, traditions, cultures, experiences, struggles, and accomplishments of diasporic communities of color, making connections between the local and transnational. The College currently houses three academic departments: Asian and Asian American Studies, Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies, and Pan-African Studies.

The Department:

Asian and Asian American Studies (AAAS) is a small but vibrant academic unit. AAAS started as a BA degree program in the fall of 2004, and in May of 2019, AAAS was granted full departmental status. Last year, AAAS successfully conducted a national search and recruited two tenure-track assistant professors, our first group of new faculty members in the program's 17-year history. Our departmental identity is rooted in community engagement, social justice education, and scholarly excellence.
