Position OverviewThe University of Kansas, Department of Special Education is recruiting applicants for a full-time, tenure track, academic year (9-month) position in our nationally ranked Special Education program with an emphasis in early intervention, early childhood special education and/or early childhood (i.e. Early Childhood Unified), beginning August 18, 2022. The position is at the assistant rank We are particularly interested in candidates whose scholarship focuses on culturally responsive approaches that are conscious of diverse and equity perspectives to support early childhood development, early intervention, family-centered practices, blended early education/early childhood special education educator preparation, evidence-based and effective instructional and/or assessment practices, and inclusive early childhood education for each and every young child (birth through eight years of age) and their families. We encourage applications from scholars who are innovative, future-oriented thinkers focused on ensuring inclusion for all children and their families. The successful candidate will contribute to a rich tradition of conducting influential research; securing external funding; teaching both undergraduate and graduate courses; mentoring and advising students; and providing university, state, and professional service. Successful candidates must have a strong interest in and commitment to both research and educator preparation.

Job Description40% - Develop and maintain an active scholarly research agenda and participate in research and grant activities.
* Create and implement scholarly work related to identifying, implementing and evaluating effective practices for infants, toddlers, and children (birth through 8 years) and their families;
* Produce research leading to new insights and advances for publication in refereed journals or other scholarly outlets;
* Participate in and present original research at scholarly conferences and conventions (e.g., Division of Early Childhood of the Council for Exceptional Children; National Association of the Education of Young Children; Teacher Education Division-CEC, Conference on Research Innovations in Early Intervention, etc.);
* Mentor master's and doctoral students in the development of research skills and in production of scholarly products; and
* Obtain external funding for research initiatives in collaboration with colleagues.
40% - Teach undergraduate and/or graduate-level courses in special education, advise undergraduate students, masters, and doctoral students.
* Advise, mentor, and teach undergraduate and masters students working toward a degree (B.S. or Masters) and/or Kansas Early Childhood Unified (blended EC/ECSE) educator license;
* Advise students working toward doctoral degrees in Special Education with a specialization in early childhood unified;
* Collaborate on the ongoing development and continuous improvement of the innovative undergraduate and graduate blended EC/ECSE educator preparation program;
* Serve on master's theses, master's projects, and doctoral committees.
20% - Contribute to professional service at all levels (e.g., department, school, university, state and national)
* Collaborate with Department of Special Education, Department of Curriculum and Teaching, and School of Education and Human Sciences (SOEHS) faculty to ensure effective undergraduate and graduate-level recruitment, advising, and educator preparation;
* Collaborate with Department of Special Education and SOEHS faculty, interdisciplinary university researchers and other stakeholders to ensure program quality, maintain state and national accreditation, and facilitate ongoing program and researcher agendas;
* Participate in Department of Special Education, SOEHS, and University committees, faculty meetings, and retreats to ensure KU programs meet all professional standards and program quality expectations;
* Collaborate with local, state, and national stakeholders to facilitate ongoing communication, advocacy, research initiatives, and educator preparation; and
* Effectively work with culturally, ethnically, linguistically marginalized populations.
Required Qualifications
* Earned doctorate in Special Education or related field from an accredited institution (e.g. early childhood, developmental psychology, and/or child development) with specialization in early intervention, early childhood and/or early childhood special education (birth through 8 years) by the date of hire;
* Evidence of successful experiences supporting infants, toddlers or young children (birth to eight years of age) and their families;
* Established record or evidence of strong potential of a line of research that leads to an a competitive record of scholarship, research, and external funding.
* Established record or evidence of strong potential of successful teaching, advising, and mentoring of undergraduate and/or graduate student in research and practice;
* Established record or evidence of strong potential to form collaborative partnerships with community programs, schools, relevant state departments, professional organizations, families, and/or others serving young children and their families.
Preferred Qualifications
* Evidence of three years' experience supporting infants, toddlers, or young children (birth to eight years of age) and their families.
