Position SummaryThe Department of Mechanical Engineering (ME) in the College of Engineering at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications for a tenure-system position at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of August 16, 2022. Candidates must have a PhD in mechanical engineering, engineering mechanics or a closely related field at the time of appointment. Additionally, applicants must be able to teach in the areas of solid mechanics at the undergraduate and graduate levels (e.g., statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, continuum mechanics).
The Department is looking for a highly motivated individual who can complement current strengths and expertise within the department. Candidates with interests and demonstrated background in any area of mechanical engineering research are encouraged to apply. Those who conduct research in Mechanical Engineering that enhance or are related to aspects of inclusion and equity are of high interest.
Mechanical Engineering at MSU has strong interdisciplinary research and educational programs with annual expenditures of approximately $8 Million. Our faculty have two prestigious Fellows of the AIMBE, as well as 9 Fellows of the ASME. Our faculty have numerous accolades including NSF CAREER awards, AFOSR awards and recognition for programs of diversity and outstanding teaching. We have approximately 200 graduate students and 1500 undergraduate students. Ongoing research within the Mechanical Engineering Department includes but is not limited to: Advanced Manufacturing, Aerospace, Biomechanics, Combustion, Control, Design, Dynamics, Energy, Fluid Dynamics, Machine Learning, Robotics, Solid Mechanics, Sustainability, and Thermal Transport, among others.
Tenure-system faculty are expected to establish a vibrant, sustainable, and internationally visible research program; make significant scholarly contributions to their discipline; be an effective teacher and mentor of both undergraduate and graduate students; engage in institutional and professional service as well as public outreach. The successful candidate will also be capable of teaching mechanical engineering courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Other qualifications include strong leadership and interpersonal skills, excellent written and oral communication skills, an ability to work in a collaborative research environment and a commitment to promoting and embracing diversity.

Minimum RequirementsCandidates must have a PhD in mechanical engineering or engineering mechanics or closely related field at the time of appointment.
