*Position Highlights:*The office for Research, Innovation & Impact (RII) invites applications for an Assistant Staff Scientist (Researcher/Scientist III) for its Analytical and Biological Mass Spectrometry (ABMS) Core. The Core provide a variety of mass spectrometry services in a well-equipped University-wide facility. The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for providing high level targeted and untargeted metabolomics, lipidomics and quantitative small molecule analyses to both University of Arizona and external researchers. Assays will include targeted and untargeted metabolomics, flux analysis, lipid profiling, and small molecule quantitation using LC and GC-MS/MS on Orbitrap Exploris 480, Q-Exactive instruments, a GC/MS and a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. The successful candidate will be involved in consulting with researchers, participation in experimental design, sample preparation, LC- and GC-MS/MS analysis, data analysis and interpretation, and instrument management. Related responsibilities will include optimization of assays, development of new analytical assays, and monitoring scientific literature. The candidate will be expected to assist the Manager in the day-to-day operation of the Core. This position will report to the Manager of the facility.

*Duties & Responsibilities:*· Receives direction from the Manager to address major research goals of the lab. Uses knowledge and technical expertise in sample preparation, separation, and analysis by mass spectrometry and data processing to complete research projects.· Prepare samples from various sources, including animal and human tissues, blood and plasma samples for analysis by mass spectrometry (both GC-MS and LC-MS/MS).· Isolation of lipids, metabolites and other analytes from human animal, microbial, and plant samples.· Prepare samples for and perform UPLC-high resolution MS lipidomics and metabolomics analyses using, GCMS, QqQs, Orbitrap Exploris 480, QExacitve and Orbitrap Exploris 480 mass spectrometers.· Attends weekly team meetings to discuss results, plan experiments to ensure that projects support current team goals in a dynamic environment.· Maintains detailed lab records, technical documents describing procedures and results.· Assist in the operation and routine maintenance of analytical instrumentation including mass spectrometers in the facility· Additional duties may be assigned. Knowledge, skills & abilities:· Excellent interpersonal and oral/written skills to interact with a diverse group of graduate and undergraduate students, staff, faculty, and visitors.· Ability to understand and perform chemical derivatizations on samples to be analyzed.· Basic understanding of the theory and practice of mass spectrometry.· Strong computer skills with the concepts and practices of the field of Bioinformatics as it relates to mass spectrometry and experience with MS-based Omics data analysis systems and software.· R programming knowledge is a plus.
*Minimum Qualifications:*Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience is required.
