OverviewThe Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory is a world-class fusion energy research laboratory managed by Princeton University for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science. PPPL is dedicated to developing the scientific and technological knowledge base for fusion energy. The Laboratory advances the fields of fusion energy and plasma physics research to develop the scientific understanding and key innovations needed to realize fusion as an energy source for the world.

The Associate Research Physicist - Quantum Information Science/Laboratory Directed R&D is to develop state-of-the-art fabrication to improve quantum bits (qubit). The role will include fabrication and measurement of superconducting and/or semiconductor spin qubits (i.e., thin film processing to defined micron to nano scale structures). A central theme is the science of defect suppression in low temperature plasma (LTP) steps including examining atomic layer etch concepts applied to qubit fabrication. A collaborative minded researcher is sought.

The work will engage LTP and machine learning expertise at PPPL combined with world leading research groups in quantum information science and surface science at Princeton University. The work will also include at least one joint research effort with a company.
Responsibilities
* Qubit fabrication 15%
* Process step characterization (e.g., AFM, ellipsometry, XPS, SIMS, ESR) 25%
* Llow temperature plasma process development and plasma characterization 40%
* Qubit measurement 20%
QualificationsEducation and Experience:

* Must have a PhD in physics, electrical engineering, surface science, plasma science, or closely related field. Shoiuld not be more than three years out post doc.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* *Desired experience*:
* Nanofabrication using thin film approaches
* Low temperature plasma processing
* Surface characterization (e.g., AFM, XPS, ellipsometry, SIMS)
* Superconductor or semiconductor device measurement - particularly interested in experience with qubit measurements or ESR/NMR
* Cyrogenics including experience with a dilution fridge is also of interest but not required
* Familiarity with coding (e.g., python, C).

Physical Requirements:

* Candidate will need to be able to do work at the Princeton University fabrication and metrology facility (PRISM).
* Hands on setup of room temperature electrical measurements.
