Lab Specialist Senior employees apply highly-developed subject matter expertise to laboratory research. They are distinguished from Lab Specialist Intermediate employees in the complexity of their work and their responsibilities for staff management. They assist in the administration and coordination of the technical activities of a scientific research lab. Lab Specialist Senior employees assist Principal Investigators or Lab Managers by performing the following tasks: designing research methodologies, managing research projects, developing and administering budgets and schedules, following established quality standards, and analyzing data and performance metrics. They ensure that standard operating procedures and protocols are maintained and applied. They employees may manage staff. They may co-author publications and co-present results with Principal Investigators.

The Department of Biology is looking to hire a Laboratory Preparer.

Primary responsibilities include ordering, preparing, setup and cleanup of laboratory materials in support of introductory biology (cell/genetics in the fall and organismal biology in the spring). This currently includes a total of 33 weekly lab sections of 24-26 students each, with three lab sections running concurrently. Support is required throughout the duration of morning and afternoon labs. Associated responsibilities include training teaching assistants (TAs) on lab procedures, coordinating the recruiting and supervising "Peer Teachers" (undergraduate students who assist the TAs), and managing student absentee records. Both introductory courses are also offered in the summer during separate four-week periods with ~50 students each. Additional responsibilities include interfacing with Environmental Health and Safety staff, managing instructional budgets, maintaining an inventory of materials and equipment, and coordinating equipment servicing. Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet software is essential. Depending on qualifications and experience, a supervisory role of other staff may be included. In addition to the above job responsibilities, other duties may be assigned.

Additional Job Description

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Experience: 9 years of experience in a lab technician role. May substitute with Master's or Terminal degree plus 4 years of experience in a lab technician role and supervisory experience. 12 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Experience in laboratory course preparation highly desired and experience with lab instruction preferred

Licensure: None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
