Summary:

The Assistant Nurse Manager (ANM)/Clinical Educator (CE) works in partnership with the nurse manager to support and lead the daily operations of the units as well as meet the educational requirements of the staff.

The ANM/CE is expected to adhere to system and department compliance policies and any applicable laws and regulations. The ANM/CE is expected to assume accountability and responsibility for translating the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of the medical center/hospital and the nursing service into effective action under the guidance of the Nurse Manager. The ANM/CE demonstrates BH operating principles and behaviors. Responsibility is centralized within five major areas: Clinical Practice and Quality Outcomes, Human Resource Leadership, Management of the Environment, Financial Growth and Stewardship and Operational Planning.

The ANM/CE is responsible, with assistance from the Nurse Manager, in the implementation and evaluation of the orientation of new employees, educational programs, certification programs, and remedial programs as needed to maintain a safe level of care; along with the coordination of the student nurse clinical experience in the ED. Works with Nurse Manager to ensure the competence of the nurse preceptors and mentors that are identified to fulfill these roles along with scheduling preceptors and mentors for all new staff and student interns. The ANM/CE is responsible for maintaining the educational records according to BH policies. The ANM/CE is a member of the Professional Development Council and the facilitator of the Unit based Clinical Nurse Practice committees. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager, the ANM/CE is responsible for input into the annual performance evaluations of all staff on the unit, as well as day to day coaching, mentoring and role modeling. The ANM/CE, along with the Nurse Manager, performs QI review, collecting and compilation of data and works to hold staff accountable to these measures. In collaboration with the Nurse Manager the ANM/CE will review the results of data and identify educational opportunities for staff with the purpose of improving the care of patients leading to improved outcomes.

Job Responsibilities:

1) Clinical Practice and Quality Outcomes the ANM/CE administers direct nursing care to patients and serves as a clinical resource and role model of clinical excellence for staff. Delivers on service promise as evidenced by metrics in all unit practices and programs. Provides leadership collaboratively with the Nurse Manager in proactively developing quality driven and cost-effective initiatives. Initiates and partners with the Nurse Manager to lead and achieve outcomes in service-based performance improvement efforts.

2) Human Resource Leadership: The ANM/CE in collaboration with the Nurse Manager leads a positive work environment that facilitates the delivery of excellent patient and caregiver experiences. Staffs are highly engaged, as evidenced by relevant metrics. Individual and collective practices reflect the Core principles of Magnet. Initiates and manages necessary change, providing support and resources to staff. Seeks opportunities to build working alliances with other professional groups. Creates opportunities for Shared Governance in order to effectively solve problems. In alignment with the Nurse Manager, is responsible for: recruiting & hiring; staff development; recognition; retention; establishing performance expectation for success; delivering performance appraisals and implementing corrective actions.

3) Management of the Patient Care Environment: The ANM/CE is a leader who is highly visible on the patient care unit and is responsible for the effective management of patient progress and outcomes of care. Leads collaborative efforts with other departments and disciplines to meet patient care needs. Accountable for unit issues in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, including the adequacy of appropriate materials and equipment, until resolution occurs.

4) Financial Growth and Stewardship: The ANM/CE is accountable to manage within budget in collaboration with the Nurse Manager as evidenced by metrics. Stewards financial resources and promotes growth by developing business plans and budget for their unit in collaboration with the Nurse Manager per organizational goals and other relevant factors. Establishes expectations with the Nurse Manager and holds accountable staff regarding the delivery of high quality, affordable care. Responds to budget variances in a proactive, timely manner in partnership with the Nurse Manager.

5) Operational Planning: The ANM/CE, in concert with the Nurse Manager, sets a progressive pace for performance improvement and based on assessment of internal and external influences, creates and implements plans that have a positive impact on the delivery of patient care and a positive work environment. Makes healthcare operations decisions /problem resolution to facilitate proper and timely patient flow on the unit and effective operations of the unit. Establishes staffing plans that respond to changing needs of the unit.

6) ANM/CE is responsible for staff education/training, establishment of a learning environment, in partnership with the Nurse Manager.

7) ANM/CE is responsible for participating in the evaluation and development of education for clinical staff, based on assessed needs; as well as maintaining the clinical competencies of the staff through annual validation days, in services, in partnership with the Nurse Manager.

8) ANM/CE is responsible for the collection of QI data and monitors unit compliance in collaboration with the Nurse Manger. Educates and collaborates with staff and management regarding unit specific QI as well as organizational QI initiatives and Core measure data, while ensuring staff compliance and accountability. Also, responsible, along with the Nurse Manger, for the evaluation of clinical documentation to ensure completion and accuracy in compliance with all regulations, policies, and QI initiatives.

9) ANM/CE is responsible for maintaining the educational records according to BH policies.

10) In collaboration with Nurse Manger ANM/CE annually evaluates, refines, updates and revises orientation curriculum to reflect current BFMC nursing practices. Evaluations and clinical competence of staff are evaluated through the direct interaction and observation, ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes and feedback from the clinician and other members of the health care team.

11) Identifies, develops, prioritizes, and oversees the educational needs of nursing and auxiliary staff based on the regulations requirements, new and/or updated policies and procedures, quality initiatives and staff, provider, in collaboration with Nurse Manager.

12) In collaboration with Nurse Manager, ensures that educational resources on each unit are up to date, by utilizing current educational methodologies, i.e. on-line training, based on accepted learning theories for the adult learner in the development and presentation of educational programs. Teaches mandatory education programs to ensure appropriate completion in all affected departments. Follows up on all mandatory educational programs and ensure compliance and accountability along with the Nurse Manager.

13) Displays appropriate knowledge for the educational material presented, selecting appropriate teaching methods and resources. Is a successful speaker and facilitator presenting material effectively for learning. Employs appropriate evaluation methods using feedback to update and revise educational curriculum.

14) ANM/CE, in collaboration with the Nurse Manager, is responsible to evaluate clinical processes and workflows to ensure efficiency, facilitates appropriate change, and ensure staffing models necessary to support case volumes and acuity.

15) Responsible for direct nurse supervision on weekends and off shifts, in partnership with the clinical supervisor.

16) Demonstrates competency for one-to-one observation of patient based on department and unit specific needs.
