DIRECTOR, SOFTWARE & APPLICATION INNOVATION LAB (SAIL), Hariri Institute

Tracking Code 3857 Job Description

Based in the Hariri Institute for Computing, the Software & Application Innovation Lab (SAIL) is a collaborative partner for Boston University faculty and researchers that engages in a variety of activities to encourage, enable, support, and execute research efforts involving technical, data-driven, computational, and software engineering aspects or components. The Director oversees the overall operations of SAIL, while working closely with the Institute's Director to integrate SAIL capacity appropriately throughout the spectrum of research projects and programs at the Institute with a software engineering component. The Director will shape and implement long-term plans for SAIL with regard to prioritizing existing opportunities, managing growth, and developing new opportunities for collaboration and partnership. Ultimately responsible for the success of SAIL, the individual in this role will serve as a key bridge between SAIL and Institute leadership and researchers and larger computing efforts throughout the University.

Towards that end, the responsibility of the SAIL Director may include:
  • Collaborating with Institute faculty affiliates in social, physical, natural, and medical science disciplines on the conception and pursuit of research projects for proposals to extramural funding agencies, serving as the co-investigator or senior personnel where applicable.
  • Proactively identifying opportunities for sponsored research and working with appropriate partners (e.g., faculty affiliates) on the development of competitive responses.
  • Authoring project plans and technical publications, providing letters of support, communicating and coordinating with a variety of stakeholders within the research community, providing consultations, and contributing to open source communities.
  • This position has two direct reports -- Associate Director for Engineering and the Assistant Director of Operations -- and will work with those positions to ensure that projects are scoped and executed appropriately. The Director is responsible for the overall cohesive functioning of the SAIL team, which includes a number of software engineers and student interns.
