Requisition Id 6046 Overview: We are seeking a physicist/nuclear engineerwho will focus on fast neutron imaging using coincidence or associated-particle techniques but will also support advanced detector systems, instrumentation, measurement techniques, and algorithms in support of applications from a broad user base. This position resides in the Advanced Radiation Detection, imaging, Data Science, and Applications group in the Nuclear Science & Advanced Technology section of the Physics Division in the Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The Advanced Radiation Detection, Imaging, Data Science, and Applications (ARDIDSA) group focuses on the development and evaluation of novel and advanced radiation detector and non-destructive evaluation concepts for basic science, nonproliferation, national security, and intelligence organizations. The ARDIDSA group performs the research and technology development to evolve these advanced concepts from conception to demonstration or deployment, including use of radiation transport codes to model these systems and analysis codes to isolate signals of interest. One core competency in the group is fast neutron imaging using the associated-particle technique. The function of this position is to assist the group in developing a portable fast neutron imaging capability based on this technique. In addition to coincidence imaging techniques, the successful candidate is also expected to have a broad range of skills appropriate to assist the group in performing research and development to yield other novel and advanced detector systems, instrumentation, measurement techniques, and algorithms in support of applications from a broad user base. The candidate will work as part of a team to meet deliverables and address technology or system issues. Results will be documented by publication in high impact papers, journals, conference papers and technical reports. The work will involve collaboration in a team environment to develop and present research proposals to generate new funding. Major Duties/Responsibilities: * Development of a portable fast-neutron imaging system that use coincidence or associated-particle techniques
* Development of physics based algorithms for advanced radiation detection systems
* Use of model and simulation tools to guide experimental system development and validate experimental results Basic Qualifications: * A PhD in physics, nuclear engineering, or a related discipline * Experience performing and analyzing fast-neutron imaging measurements that use the associated-particle technique Preferred Qualifications: * Demonstrated hands-on experience in experimental laboratory techniques, including the development of advanced and/or novel detectors, component-level familiarity with simple circuits using breadboards and/or printed circuit boards, and experience with silicon PM light sensors and PSD-plastic scintillators,
* Proficiency with data analysis using ROOT and/or Python,
* Experience with radiation transport simulation using MCNP or GEANT, including modeling of detector response,
* Familiarity with iterative image reconstruction techniques,
* Excellent human relation and oral and written communication skills,
* Demonstrated initiative and ability to work as part of a team with a broad range of domestic or international collaborators, and
* Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs Special Requirements This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Q clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
