Requisition Id 5906 Level: MG04 Overview: Oak Ridge National Laboratory is seeking outstanding candidates for the position of Director of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division (CSMD). The CSM Director reports to the Associate Laboratory Director for Computing and Computational Sciences and is responsible for the organization's technical leadership, operation and management. As background, the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate (CCSD) oversees ORNL's immense store of computing power and its talented staff of computational scientists, computer scientists, and applied mathematicians, conducting state-of-the-art research and development in support of DOE's missions and programs. CCSD contains the institutional knowledge needed to transform basic science into cutting-edge energy and security applications critical to national interests and is committed to research and development in the data sciences, including the modeling, simulation, and analysis of rapidly growing data sources. The directorate is also a premier source for high-performance computing, computing systems, applied mathematics, quantum information science, and artificial intelligence research. The directorate stewards the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF), home to the nation's most powerful supercomputer, Summit, which enables us to address, with greater complexity and higher fidelity, questions concerning who we are, as well as our place on earth and in our universe. The OLCF will also be home to Frontier, ORNL's upcoming exascale supercomputer scheduled for delivery in 2021. Three principles guide CCSD's strategy: computing to enable convergence of experiment, theory, simulation, and data for Science and Engineering; accelerating innovation for science and technology through advanced computing; and engaging in a codesign partnership approach. Over the past decade, ORNL, through CCSD, has established a record for deploying the world's largest and most powerful computing systems and this emphasis on extreme scale systems is expected to continue into the foreseeable future. Sustaining this capability requires a deep integration of research programs spanning computational approaches to science and engineering, applied mathematics, and computer science with a world class scientific user facility program that is capable of deploying and ensuring the effective utilization of these systems. The new CSMD director will be encouraged to grow the division's research portfolio to support the laboratory's goals in extreme-scale computing, in collaboration with the other divisions in CCSD at ORNL: NCCS (National Center for Computational Sciences) which is responsible for maintaining the user facility and CSE (Computational Sciences and Engineering) which is responsible for maintaining research programs in computational sciences. CSMD delivers fundamental and applied research capabilities in applied mathematics and computer science, including experimental computing systems, scalable algorithms and systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, data management, workflow systems, analysis and visualization technologies, programming systems and environments, and systems science and engineering. These capabilities are delivered in three research sections: (1) Mathematics in Computation, which includes core capabilities in Discrete Algorithms, Data Analysis and Machine Learning, Multiscale Methods, and Systems and Decisions Sciences; (2) Advanced Computing Systems Research, with core capabilities in Beyond Moore Computing, Architectures and Performance, Intelligent Systems, Programming Systems, Application Engineering and Software Engineering; and (3) Data and AI Systems Research, with core capabilities in Scientific Visualization, Learning Systems, Workflow Systems, Performance Engineering and Data Engineering. Capabilities in research software and data engineering are expected to evolve and grow into a new and section. Major Duties/Responsibilities: In concert with the CSMD staff and with broad national and international collaboration, the successful candidate will create and execute an imaginative and far-sighted research program that will define long-term foundations for advanced computing for the laboratory and the nation. The major duties and responsibilities of the position are, but are not limited to, the following: * Lead strategic and business planning, business development and relationship management, and program execution in computer science and mathematics at ORNL, including
* Research programs in Applied Mathematics and Computer Science sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR);
* ASCR sponsored SciDAC (Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing) Institutes;
* ASCR projects and initiative, including the Exascale Computing Project (ECP), and emerging initiatives in AI for Science (AI4S); and
* Work sponsored by industry and other federal agencies through Strategic Partnership Programs, User Agreements and Cooperative Research and Development Agreements.
* Work with peers at other national laboratories to support a broad and rich computing research culture throughout the DOE.
* Ensure a stimulating environment for creativity and scientific excellence that will attract and retain outstanding research staff.
* Establish long-range plans for current programs and proposed programs in the division; and provide aggressive leadership for the organization, in both a managerial and technical capacity.
* Team with the CCSD ALD and other division directors in strategic planning, top-level program development and execution.
* Manage resources and operations of a computer science and mathematics research organization by identifying opportunities to enhance capabilities with respect to hiring staff, procuring equipment, and allocation of space.
* Foster clear communications within and outside the Computer Science and Mathematics Division.
* Highlight technical achievements and staff recognition, identifying opportunities, and addressing issues of importance for the organization.
* Mentor staff for professional success and technical leadership, including those holding Group Leader and Section Head positions in CSMD.
* Promote a culture of safety and equality in the workplace.
* Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL's values and ethics.
* Organize, direct, and manage all functions of the Computer Science and Mathematics Division in accordance with policies, procedures and mandates. Basic Qualifications: * Technical degree in computer science, data science, applied mathematics, or a related field.
* An international record of research achievement, as evidenced by scholarly publications, patents, development and release of software products, and/or funded research grants.
* A minimum of 15 years of related experience.
* A minimum of 5 years of demonstrated management and technical leadership experience. Preferred Qualifications: * Previous work experience with DOE sponsors, including the Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR) programs, Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program, and the Exascale Computing Project (ECP) highly desired.
* The proven ability to plan, organize, and manage the activities of a diverse organizational unit within a major R&D directorate.
* A demonstrated record of supporting the professional development of research staff.
* Effective interpersonal and mentoring skills.
* Demonstrated written and oral communication skills. Special Requirement: This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Security Clearance. This position is a Workplace Substance Abuse Program (WSAP) testing designated position, which requires passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program in which employees are subject to being randomly selected for testing. The occupant of this position will also be subject to an ongoing requirement to report to ORNL any drug-related arrest or conviction or receipt of a positive drug test result.
