Purdue University's Patti & Rusty Rueff School of Design, Art and Performance is seeking a music technologist at the rank of Clinical Assistant Professor. Primary duties include teaching courses; running the computer music/sound design lab, which uses Finale and Digital Performer as its primary software tools; and maintaining a solid understanding of current practice across diverse musical genres. The list of courses may include Computer Skills in Music; Electronic Music; Digital Audio Recording and Production I-II; Introduction to Sound Studios; courses in Purdue's nationally recognized Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts program; and advanced courses that may include Audio for Video Post, Advanced Recording, Synthesis and Sampling, Sound Reinforcement, or others according to the candidate's expertise. Job will require collaboration with and teaching in the Department of Theatre. Clinical professors are often referred to as professors of professional practice. Unlike tenure-track professors, they are not required to do research or creative activity, but may do so, for example as composers, arrangers, sound designers, etc. Scholarship of engagement, teaching, and learning is also encouraged. Clinical professors are critical to the success of the university and may be promoted to the associate and full clinical professor levels.
The candidates must have a terminal degree (MFA, PhD, or DMA) in music technology, composition, production, sound design, or related field with at least three years of advanced-level teaching and/or professional studio experience; they should also be familiar with all the relevant software, including Finale, Digital Performer, Pro Tools, DPS/MAX, Jitter, and other sampling and sound development tools. Candidates with master's degrees (MM, MA, etc.) may be considered with equivalent professional or academic experience or with evidence of potential success in teaching at the collegiate level. The successful candidate should have a solid understanding of modern recording, production, and sound reinforcement techniques as they apply to live concerts and theatrical productions.
The Rueff School of Design, Art, and Performance consists of the Department of Art and Design, Department of Theatre, Division of Dance, Division of Music, and Purdue University Galleries. The School resides in the College of Liberal Arts and is a dynamic leader with recognized national standing in the Arts. In 2021 the University approved a new BA in music degree which marks a significant milestone in the College and School's development. The BA in music with a concentration in Music Technology will further build on Purdue University's preeminence in science and technology. The Rueff School also offers a nationally recognized program in Sound for the Performing Arts through the Department of Theatre.
