Job Summary

The Undergraduate Teaching Lab Manager will have the opportunity to become part of Agriculture and Biologicial Engineering's world leading laboratory based instructional team. This individual will develop and administer project and laboratory based instruction, support and aid faculty who are developing and delivering laboratory based teaching, and maintain personal excellence in educational techniques, technologies and industrial practice. This position will also be responsible for student mentoring as well as agricultural and engineering outreach.

Lab Equipment Coordination and Maintenance:

* Collaborate with faculty for maintenance of teaching laboratories, equipment and facilities
* Keep inventories of equipment, tools, and supplies
* Ensure that equipment and necessary resources in laboratories are operational and available
* Assist with public relations (maintain relationships with parts/equipment vendors, seek parts donations for student design projects, publicize special activities, etc.)
* Coordinate purchase requests for parts, equipment, tools, chemicals, and software. Provide laboratory instruction when needed
* Help with fabrication of equipment including offering advice on prototypes
* Write proposals to federal agencies, industry, and the campus for funds, equipment, and software that support the undergraduate teaching mission of the department at the request of the Department Head

Lab Preparation and Facilitation:

* Monitor application of all experimental protocols to ensure the satisfactory operation of the experiments in the teaching laboratory
* Modify and improve experiments in consultation with relevant professor(s)
* Devise alternatives to meet the usual uncertainties and crises occasionally encountered in laboratory teaching, e.g. instrument failures and shipment delays
* Work with current Safety Officer to monitor safety practices for ABE
* Supervise laboratory responses regarding compliance with safety regulations and preparation for safety audits
* Work with the laboratory TAs and professors to improve teaching effectiveness, performance, and safety
* Assess and correct safety problems and violations
* Assist with obtaining and maintaining laboratory certification and training in safe and appropriate use of equipment

In-Class Support:

* Work with the faculty and teaching assistants to prepare laboratories for instruction
* Collaborate with faculty on development of laboratory assignments
* When several classes use the same laboratory, coordinate the use of the lab by the different classes
* Direct laboratory instruction to align with College and Departmental plans
* As needed, become familiar with software programs used for class laboratories and assignments and help with instruction of students on use of the software
* Maintain and improve personal understanding of ABE and keep apprised of pedagogical advances in teaching of the field through independent reading as well as attendance at on- and off-campus short courses and national meetings
* Advise faculty on new developments in instructional methods that would be relevant to the enhancement of departmental laboratory teaching portfolios
* Senior design class development and project supervision
* The senior design classes are different every year and require substantial support and mentoring of students as they encounter the challenges of creating new systems and ideas
* Be available to advise and assist student teams including the student quarter scale team and the Purdue Utility Platform Team
* Evening club meetings on Mondays and other occasional non-business hours

Recruitment and Outreach Support:

* Assist with public relations including lab tours
* Lead, coordinate and provide leadership and oversight for departmental faculty, staff, and undergraduate student organizations and their associated on and off-campus outreach projects including the ABE Ambassadors, Women in Engineering Program, Minority in Engineering and Agriculture programs, SpringFest, HASA (Hoosier Agribusiness Science Academy.), FFA, Experience Purdue, 4-H Roundup, and various school visits
* The University has a strong outreach program that includes workshops and special activities for visitors and prospective students. The lab manager will help with the development of these workshops and activities


* Bachelor's in Engineering or Technology or similar field
* 2 years of experience managing or working in an engineering or technology-related field
* Technical skills and abilities to run ABE Labs
* Understanding of and/or willingness to learn the computer design tools used in ABE
* Ability to learn how to use and instruct others on the use of computer software used in ABE laboratories
* Excellent interpersonal and communication (verbal and written) skills, with the ability to work with people of various backgrounds
* Good time management and organizational skills
* Ability to learn and adapt to changing learning environments
* Ability to work with undergraduate and graduate students and faculty to educate and train students on the operation and capabilities of biological, electronic, and mechanical equipment, computers, and/or computer software as they apply to their design projects
* Ability to take the initiative to solve problems, assume responsibility, establish and maintain quality standards
* Ability to help with fabrication and skills prototype development


* Agricultural or Biological Engineering or related area experience
* Teaching experience, including experience in preparing and delivering educational materials
* Experience with active learning (lab based) contexts
* Supervisory experience
