*About the Department:*The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences (FBNS) is a team of scientists. researchers, and teachers committed to guiding the undergraduate and graduate education of students preparing for professional and technical careers in Food, Bioprocessing, and Nutrition Sciences. As a department, FBNS identifies, develops, and applies the appropriate concepts, theories. and emerging methodologies from the fundamental disciplines of chemistry, engineering, microbiology, food and bioprocessing. nutrition, and sensory science, to the investigation of critical issues in food & biological systems, components, products, and processes.
*Essential Job Duties:*The Department of Food, Bioprocessing and Nutrition Sciences seeks a highly-qualified candidate for an Assistant Professor position in the area of Food Systems Sustainability. This will be a tenure-track position with an 80% research and 20% teaching appointment. The incumbent will be expected to develop an internationally recognized, multidisciplinary, externally-funded research program in the area of food systems waste and/or sustainability that involves aspects of processing, microbiology, chemistry, and engineering. This includes an expectation to train graduate and undergraduate students via research and internship experiences.

*Research and teaching could include areas such as, but not limited to: *

* Recycling, repurposing, recovery, and commercialization of value-added components in plant, animal, or fermentation-based food waste streams to contribute to a circular economy.
* Food-related wastewater quality, wastewater reuse, and minimization of industrial water use.
* Food packaging, biosensor/remote sensing, or omics solutions to prevent, identify, or minimize waste.
* Food processing solutions to minimize material inputs, waste and energy use.
* The use of machine learning or artificial intelligence to maximize efficiency in food processing and storage across the food supply chain via process control, traceability or other means.

Collaborations with departments and programs within College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), College of Natural Resources (CNR), and College of Engineering (COE), such as the Plants for Human Health Institute, the North Carolina Food Innovation Lab, the Center for Advanced Processing and Packaging Studies, The Center for Human Health and the Environment, as well as public- and private-sector stakeholders are encouraged. The successful candidate will be expected to engage in service to the department, college, university, and profession through participation in committees or task forces. The incumbent will be expected to develop and teach at least one graduate and/or undergraduate level course per year in the area of sustainable food systems and deliver guest lectures in the food science curriculum. The position is also expected to serve on department/college committees.

*Minimum Education and Experience:*
* Ph.D. in Food Science, Biochemistry, Biological or Agricultural Engineering, or related discipline.
*Other Required Qualifications:*
* Demonstrate competencies in oral and written communications as well as interpersonal skills.
* Ability to manage multiple priorities and evidence of student or staff mentoring.
*Preferred Qualifications:*
* Post-doctoral and/or industry experience.
* Expertise in omics technologies and or data science.
* Experience in processing.
* Evidence of collaboration with food scientists and other stakeholders.
