The Department of Geology and Geography in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences (ECAS) at West Virginia University, with the WVU Research Corporation is seeking applications for Post-Doctoral Research Assistant. The post-doctoral research associate workload will consist of the development and testing of analytical methods for analog chemical sediments for potential return Mars 2020 rocks and sediments, as well as serving as a team member for the Mars 2020 science team. Analytical methods will include petrography, fluid inclusion studies, and/or laser Raman spectroscopy. The focus of this project will be to: (1) document chemical and biological characteristics to be able to help recognize similar features in situ on Mars via Mars Perseverance rover; and (2) to help refine methods for future analyses of Mars return samples.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • 50% Research (petrographic observations, analytical testing of chemical sediments)
  • 25% Serving as a Mars 2020 science team member by attending Mars 2020 remote meetings and serving team on remote tactical shifts for campaign implementation.
  • 20% Disseminating research results via presentations and manuscripts.
  • 5% Participating in lab group meetings; helping to mentor student researchers
  • PhD in Geology (or closely related field, such as Geoscience or Earth Science)
  • Some knowledge of chemical sediments and/or fluid inclusions
  • Experience with petrography
  • Experience with laser Raman spectroscopy is preferred, but not required
  • Familiarity with Mars geology is preferred, but not required
  • Demonstrated ability to make petrographic observations
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze data
  • Demonstrated ability to work with analytical instruments, such as a laser Raman spectrometer or fluid inclusion stage
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively
