We are actively seeking an enthusiastic Senior Research Leader with subject matter expertise in epidemiology, data sciences, biostatistics, or clinical sciences to provide senior leadership over and growth within our public health research portfolio. SSS has long-standing, successful legacy of conducting research on behalf of a number of Federal clients, including NIH, AHRQ, CMS, and CDC. In this role, you will work alongside teams of epidemiologists, biostatisticians, statisticians, data managers and analysts, and study operations staff to solve complex data and research study design challenges that address a variety of critical public health and clinical research questions. The perfect candidate will be interested in pushing the boundaries in research and data science to make the biggest impact possible - to help our customers create a healthier world.

The Senior Research Scientist is responsible for technical program oversight; cultivating client and partner relationships; contributing to business development (both contracts and grants); mentoring and, where appropriate, supervision of more junior research team members. This position reports to our Chief Scientist and works collaboratively with senior leaders across SSS, DLH and the Program Management team to grow our research and data sciences offering on existing and new contracts and grants. T his position will also have the opportunity to help shape company research and scientific priorities so that they align with the overall mission and goals of the organization. Further, the Senior Research Scientist will help keep the company competitive by staying updated on scientific and technological advances and industry trends in their area of specialty. This may include making recommendations on future projects, such as new research investments or technological ventures. This individual may serve as Principal Investigator or Project Director on relevant, complex international or domestic research/clinical research projects/programs.

We seek a dynamic, visionary leader with the skills and motivation to assist with developing new capabilities and business relationships that expand the client base and scientific portfolio of SSS. The Senior Research Scientist may also serve public relations functions by representing the scientific goals and interests of the company at press conferences, meetings, conventions, and shareholder events.
Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily:
  • Provide research expertise and serve as a subject matter expert to obtain funding for, plan, and execute research projects and programs.
  • Participate in strategic and operations planning for SSS as it relates to building data and research capabilities to promote organic growth of research portfolio.
  • Collaborate with other technical and scientific leaders to design technical approach on existing and new research studies. Provide technical leadership and direction to staff regarding research design, survey content, data analysis, and study conclusions.
  • Actively participate in external science-based associations and organizations through publication of manuscripts, presentations, engagement as speakers and session chairs and through participation on planning committees, with the overarching goal to further awareness of DLH/SSS capabilities and core competencies.
  • Strong skills in leading and authoring grant and contract proposals. Contribute to proposal efforts, as appropriate, through provision of thought leadership on innovative technical/science solutions, contribute to science writing, and provide color team leadership and engagement to ensure highest success rate possible for key and strategic proposal efforts.
  • Develop and nurture business relationships with other SSS Groups, DLH, external partners and clients; serves as senior advisor as appropriate for these entities.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration within the Practice Area, with emphasis on mentoring, encouraging scientific visibility and empowering scientific independence through internal research and development investments, participation in review boards, and engagement with science-based organizations, among other activities.
  • Serve as a formal mentor for mid-career researchers/scientists, working to build their publication and presentation skills, gain visibility in appropriate science-based organizations, and hone their proposal/grant writing capability.
  • Support strategic growth of the SSS business through development of customer relationships in the Federal government contracting arena, particularly at NIH and CDC.
  • Serve as an ambassador, internally and externally, to promote the agenda of the DLH/SSS organization. Conduct oneself in a professional and appropriate manner, always, with staff and external clients and customers.
Qualifications
Candidates for this position should have the following education/experience and demonstrate mastery of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Education and Experience:
  • PhD, or equivalent degree with specialization in statistics, biostatistics, epidemiology, infectious diseases, clinical research/sciences or similar area, plus at least 10 to 15 years of proven experience in a senior leadership position successfully managing increasingly complex research studies in a federal contracts arena.
  • Strong reputation in science field, as demonstrated by publications/presentations and membership in scientific organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience effectively working with and providing supervision of a staff of researchers and operations team leads in a public health research environment preferred.
  • The ability to operate at the senior level and influence, negotiate and make decisions in a timely, professional, and productive manner.
  • Proven ability to make timely and impactful decisions to drive business and staff growth.
  • Experience working with customers in the federal government contract research space.
  • Experience with federal government contracts and/or required.
  • Ability to gain internal support, operate independently with limited supervision and feedback, and establish a solid working relationship with technical staff, program managers, and peers within DLH Corp and across DLH Corp.
  • Candidates must be a US citizen.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills are essential, as is the demonstrated ability to contribute to diverse projects, manage competing demands, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and to mentor and develop staff in applicable domains.
  • Strong quantitative and qualitative skills.
