The Art & Art History Department at the University of Utah invites applicants for a Career-line faculty position focused on teaching undergraduate and graduate students a broad range of traditional sculptural skill sets in wood and metal. The teaching load for this position is 3/3 and includes metal sculpture, wood working, mold making, and three foundation courses per year. It will also be expected that the position assist in maintaining labs, tools, and equipment.
The Sculpture Intermedia area of the Art & Art History Department is a forward thinking, interdisciplinary, studio art program where we practice a combination of traditional sculpture processes/techniques as well as cutting-edge digital means and modes of creative research.
Therefore, we seek a passionate sculptor to educate students on specific skill sets using traditional and non-traditional methods of working with wood and metal in our four dedicated labs, utilize the machines and tools necessary for manipulating these materials, and create artworks that speak about our time.
With a focus on safety, the position will teach the required specialized, traditional fabrication skill set courses as well as 3D classes in our foundations program. Thus, the successful candidate will possess knowledge of digital processes and equipment to expand the use of the department's Laser Cutter, joint owned CNC router, and any future acquisitions such as a Water Jet Plasma Cutter. They will also have skills in both craft and critical thinking, innovation and exploration, and a commitment to fostering supplemental growth to students from all areas. Providing students' safe practices early in their educational journeys will continue to prove beneficial as they grow within their specific areas of study.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in Art with an emphasis in sculpture, studio art, or a related field.
Expertise in metal fabrication and wood working as an artistic practice.
Broad range of knowledge on artistic practices with the desired materials and processes that represent global approaches.
* Skillfully proficient in welding, cold metal forming, and wood working.
* Thorough knowledge of critical safety measures with tools and machinery.
Demonstrated ability to successfully facilitate student learning.
* Effective planning, organization, communication, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact and collaborate effectively with students of diverse backgrounds.
Candidates must possess the required skills and be able to explain and demonstrate that the essential functions of the position can be performed.
