The role

Bristol University Press (BUP) is looking for a Commissioning Editor (CE) or Senior Commissioning Editor (SCE) to join their dynamic and committed team and develop their trade list. The Editor will be responsible for signing up titles for both our BUP and Policy Press imprints that reach a cross-over trade market and align with our focus on social and environmental justice and the global social challenges facing society now and in the future.

This is the first role at the Press to focus exclusively on trade titles and it is a fantastic opportunity for a talented editor who is committed to social change. The Editor will have the opportunity to publish books by academics, professionals, and journalists that tackle important issues such as inequality, diversity and climate action, building on previous successes such as The Class Ceiling , White Privilege and Radical Empathy .

The Press will appoint at either CE (Grade I) or SCE (Grade J) level based on demonstrable skills and experience. Flexible working requests will be considered.

We are currently operating a blended working policy with a minimum one day per week in office requirement (based in central Bristol on campus).

What will you be doing?

The CE/SCE will be responsible for proactively acquiring - directly and from agents - and managing new trade book projects. They will ensure that high-quality, accessible content is delivered on time and to budget. They will be responsible for building a profitable list, driving ideas forward and making projects happen, working very closely with marketing, publicity, and sales colleagues.

You should apply if

You have proven experience of commissioning serious/scholarly trade titled and a track record of managing commercially successful lists. Ideally the Editor will have some knowledge of academic publishing and experience of commissioning in related subject areas would be an advantage. You will share BUP's commitment to global impact and author care and have strong organisational skills, the ability to juggle competing priorities, to think critically, and problem solve. We are looking for someone who is creative, reliable and unflappable with excellent editorial, copy-writing, and interpersonal skills.

This is a challenging role for a motivated and enthusiastic individual with ideas and an ability to spot potential opportunities for successful trade titles. The CE/SCE will be part of a passionate team, responsible for building an exciting frontlist and contributing to the success of BUP.

UK and international travel may be required.

We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
