SCCD's strategic south San Diego County locations position the College to provide exceptional service to a binational community on the U.S.-Mexico International Border. Knowledge and Abilities:
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the direction of the Senior Director of Nursing and Health Occupations Programs, assume a leadership role in the organization and management of the nursing programs skills lab. Teach clinical lab skills to CNA, VN and ADN nursing students. Requirements of the position include but are not limited to:
  • Coordinate all laboratory functions including classroom lectures, skills laboratory activities and student practice activities.
  • Prepare and improve classroom, skills laboratory, and instruction.
  • Assume responsibility and provide supervision of students in the laboratory setting.
  • Participate and/or develop critical thinking scenarios for the classroom and for use in the nursing skills laboratory.
  • Promote problem-solving and critical thinking skills in the learning and practice of nursing skills.
  • Participate in developing scenarios for low-fidelity simulations in the nursing skills laboratory.
  • Monitor equipment and supplies for replacement, repairs and disposal.
  • Order equipment and supplies for skills laboratory within allowed budget.
  • Ensure maintenance of an orderly, clean and organized skills laboratory.
  • Develop skills stations, coordinate and evaluate skills testing.
  • Participate in faculty team meetings and in nursing program committees.
  • Participate with faculty in development of course objectives, course daily plan, and evaluation of total curriculum and revision of program policies.
  • Communicate with director, program chair, or semester coordinator, and team members regarding student concerns and issues and student progress as appropriate.
  • Maintain and file student records, grade reports and rosters.
  • Remain current in the assigned subject matter and techniques of effective instruction through recent clinical experience and/or professional development.

1. Subject matter preparation: a. Experience teaching at the registered nurse level in the designated nursing area or its equivalent by demonstrating clinical competence (for approval from the BRN). (Why chemistry specifically?)b. Knowledge of and commitment to teaching strategies and methods which enhance student success at community colleges.c. Effective oral and written communication skills.d. Demonstrated ability to teach the courses or perform the duties effectively as described above (teaching demonstration will be part of the interview).e. Ability to communicate well with students of diverse academic, ethnic, socioeconomic, and cultural backgrounds, including students with disabilities.f. Ability to work cooperatively with others. 2. Evidence of ability and effectiveness as a faculty member: a. Understanding of the role and purpose of the community college.b. Ability to evaluate ones andragogy and its effectiveness in facilitating student learning.c. Ability to use teaching methods that engage racially, ethnically, academically, and culturally diverse students; promote critical thinking and emphasize cooperation and collaboration.d. Sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. e. Commitment to collegiality and collaboration by working as a team with faculty and staff enhancing instruction, curriculum, and student success; as well as in the planning of class schedules and teaching rotations.f. Knowledge and practice of culturally responsive pedagogy and andragogy that supports student-centered, self-reflective, and student-capable approaches which includes a wide range of institutional delivery systems.g. Ability to teach online courses effectively.h. Commitment to professional responsibilities and associations outside of the classroom through contributions to the department, division and college activities.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications: (Faculty and Academic Administrator Positions Only)
Masters degree in Nursing
OR
Bachelors degree in Nursing AND a Masters degree in Health Education or Health Science
OR A valid Community College Credential OR the equivalent

Desirable Qualifications:
Candidates must exhibit an appreciation of, a sensitivity to, and respect for a rich and diverse academic environment, inclusive of students, faculty, and staff of varying social, economic, cultural, ideological and ethnic backgrounds, and those with disabilities. Experience working in a community with a similar diversity pattern as is found in the service area for Southwestern College is desirable.

Salary
Upon initial employment, full-time faculty members are placed on the salary schedule based upon years of experience and education. Initial salary placement for experience can range from $55,070.00-$82,863.00 per year. Faculty members are encouraged to continue their professional development through additional study qualifying them for advancement on the salary schedule.
