The role
The School of Geographical Sciences at the University of Bristol is seeking to appoint a Lecturer in Geographic Data Science. The successful applicant will expand the School's capacity for research and teaching on geographic data science, will be involved in the new MSc in Geographic Data Science and Data Analytics and will join the Quantitative Spatial Science Research Group.
What will you be doing?
This appointment will build on the School's historic strengths in quantitative geography, spatial modelling and geocomputation, and will further expand its current strength in human geography orientated geographic data science. The successful candidate will have an established expertise and research trajectory in using and/or developing state of the art methods within the broader data science domain to answer research questions around cities and regions. We are particularly interested in candidates whose expertise includes, among other things, machine learning (particularly deep learning), earth observation, image analysis, open science, and global urban analytics/city science. The successful candidate will be able to contribute to the School's new MSc in Geographic Data Science and Spatial Analytics commencing September 2022.
They will have the opportunity to develop their own research programme within a highly supportive institutional environment. Apart from the Quantitative Spatial Science Research Group's long and well established reputation in quantitative, human geography, the School of Geographical Sciences hosts broader expertise in data science applications for physical geography and climate science, as well as the global urban system. More broadly, the University of Bristol is part of The Alan Turing Institute, the national institute for data science and artificial intelligence. It also established the Jean Golding Institute, which is the central hub for data science and data-intensive research at the University of Bristol. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to also contribute to the work of other interdisciplinary research institutes, including the Elizabeth Blackwell Institute for Health Research, the Cabot Institute for the Environment and the Brigstow Institute dedicated to supporting experimental and collaborative research on new ways of living well.
The School of Geographical Sciences, like many other Schools and Departments across the University, is committed to efforts to decolonise our curriculum and to transform our research and teaching as part of these efforts. The successful candidate will be joining the School at an important time in our history and we especially welcome applicants interested in supporting this work.
You should apply if
Candidates should have completed their PhD or be near completion and will have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, research, teaching, and administration appropriate to their career stage. The role of Lecturer in Geographic Data Science is an open-ended Pathway 1 position. This means we expect the role holder will develop their research including actively seeking opportunities to fund their research and publish their research findings, contribute to teaching in both our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes as well as doctoral supervision, and support the activities of the School in an administrative role.
We welcome applications from all members of our community and are particularly encouraging those from diverse groups, such as members of the LGBT+ and BAME communities, to join us.
