We are currently searching for an Animal Biologist Small Animal to support services to satisfy the overall operational objectives of the Molecular Neurobiology Section (MNS) in the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. The primary objective is to provide services and deliverables through performance of support services. This opportunity is full-time, and it is on site in Bethesda, MD.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Conduct research consistent with research goals of the Molecular Neurobiology Section which includes: tissue culture, plasmid DNA cloning, quantitative PCR, RNA isolation and immunohistochemistry
  • Analyze gene expression using a variety of cellular and molecular methodologies and assays including: Plasmid DNA cloning; Tissue culture; Ultracentrifugation; RNA Isolation; Quantitative PCR qPCR; RNA sequencing library construction ; Histology immunohistochemistry and RNA FISH
  • Provide general lab maintenance of lab equipment and reagents, Operate and routinely maintain specialized laboratory equipment, Maintain a clean and organized laboratory working environment, Procure laboratory supplies, reagents and equipment
  • Work products and documents related to design and conduct of research procedures
  • Work with staff to maintain, breed, genotype and phenotype transgenic animal colony; maintain records of animal colony
  • Develop and maintain a spreadsheet of animal breeding records; record lineage, genotype, birth, death and experimental use of each animal
  • Independently perform genotyping of animals
  • Set up animals to be available in numbers and at the time required
  • Update animal protocol through the submission of amendments and submission of new animal protocols to ensure necessary animal work for experiments
  • Provide technical expertise in breeding colony management
  • Develop and maintain a breeding database to record all animals in the breeding colony
  • Determine type and number of animals to order and start labs colony of animals
  • Anticipate animal needs for lab research and colony maintenance; adjust the number of breeding pairs accordingly
  • Determine best type of breeding units to set up for lab needs, including but not limited to continuous pairs, harems, and timed-pregnancies
  • Manage and breed animal colonies; genotype animals and report genotyping results to staff
  • Provide general lab maintenance of lab equipment and reagents
  • Handle, dissect and euthanize animals
  • plasmid DNA Cloning
  • Perform experiments with primary tissues and cells in culture, utilizing sterile techniques
  • Perform a variety of specialized tissue fixation, embedding, sectioning and staining techniques
  • Tissue Culture
  • Perform PCR-based genotyping
  • Perform genomic DNA preparation, genotyping and other analyses of animal tissues using DNA extraction and PCR
  • Carry out molecular biological experiments, including extracting genomic DNA, performing PCR and gel electrophoresis, cloning DNA fragments and preparing plasmid DNA, generating high quality RNA using in vitro transcription
  • Perform standard molecular biology techniques, including, but not limited to, cloning, in situ hybridization and qPCR
  • Work under BSL1 and BSL2 level
  • Perform light and confocal microscopy
  • Perform apoptosis assays, qtr-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry and molecular cloning techniques
  • Work with staff to process tissue for immunohistochemistry
  • Perform molecular biology and cloning techniques, tissue histochemistry and immunohistochemistry
  • Maintain a daily notebook that includes accurate, detailed records of laboratory experiments
  • Document all laboratory procedures, experiments and results; maintain and update laboratory notebooks and databases
  • Collaborate with team members to determine, evaluate and discuss the progress of projects; point out problems and suggest solutions to problems or augmentation of experimental approaches
  • Compile with laboratory safety procedures and regulatory policies to ensure a safe laboratory environment
  • Perform experiments in accordance with protocols and complete annual laboratory safety training

Requirements Skills
  • Knowledge of proper laboratory disposal methods and safety procedures
  • Experience handling laboratory mice and managing or maintaining a mouse colony consisting of multiple genetically modified mouse lines.
  • Experience in a combination of two or more of the following: quantitative PCR, RNA isolation, next-generation sequencing, in situ hybridization, immunohistochemistry, and/or neural stem cell culture.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Experience mentoring junior lab members
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology
  • At least 1-2 years of experience
