Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Ph.D. in chemistry or a related field. * Experience with basic synthetic methods and sample preparation under inert conditions. * Self-motivated and able to work in a diverse, collaborative team environment. * Excellent verbal and written communication skills as evidenced by a publication history. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: * Radiation chemistry (including pulse radiolysis), photochemistry or a related field. * Experience with time-resolved spectroscopies, such as UV/Vis transient absorption (TA) and time-resolved infrared (TRIR). * Kinetic modeling, thermodynamics, electron transfer. * Experience designing, building, and/or modifying experimental apparatus. Additional Information: BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness or other life-changing events. At Brookhaven National Laboratory we believe that a comprehensive employee benefits program is an important and meaningful part of the compensation employees receive. Our benefits program includes, but is not limited to: * Medical, Dental, and Vision Care Plans * Flexible Spending Accounts * Paid Time-off and Leave Programs (vacation, holidays, sick leave, paid parental leave) * 401(k) Plan * Flexible Work Arrangements * Tuition Assistance, Training and Professional Development Programs * Employee Fitness/Wellness & Recreation: Gym/Basketball Courts, Weight Room, Fitness Classes, Indoor Pool, Tennis Courts, Sports Clubs/Activities (Basketball, Ping Pong, Softball, Tennis) Brookhaven National Laboratory and the Energy and Photon Sciences Directorate are committed to your success. We offer a supportive work environment and the resources necessary for you to succeed. The Chemistry Division has an opening for a postdoctoral research associate in the Electron- and Photo- Induced Processes Group. The successful candidate will work on gaining a fundamental mechanistic understanding of the radiation chemistry of organic liquids, such as acetonitrile, and DMF, using pulse radiolysis, gamma radiolysis and/or laser flash photolysis. This will include the development of new solvent-class-based radical scavengers for the conversion of radiolytic solvent radicals into secondary reductants/oxidants and/or less reactive species. Another major aspect of the work will be to develop and exploit the unique time-resolved mid-IR (TRIR) detection capabilities at ACER for the structural characterization of transient intermediates involved in light harvesting charge transfer and the radiolysis of non-aqueous media that are important in energy-related applications, such as ionic liquids and alkyl carbonates. The work will be under the supervision of Dr. David Grills. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: * Plan and carry out research in radiation-induced reaction kinetics and mechanisms, including pulse radiolysis experiments on ACER's accelerator facilities. * Develop and apply the TRIR detection methodologies at ACER to systems relevant to solar energy conversion. * Manuscript preparation and presentation of results at national and international meetings.
