Organizational Unit Overview The College of Health and Human Performance is home to eight academic units. There are excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary research collaborations within the College and across the University. The College employs two full-time instructional technology consultants, a quantitative methodologist, and pre- and post-award grant specialists.

The Department of Interior Design and Merchandising is comprised of faculty members whose research and teaching interests span a variety of areas that center on the health and well-being of the individual and the community. The Department offers two fully accredited academic programs and a variety of enriching experiences for students' professional development. Academic programs include a BS in Interior Design that serves over 150 student majors and a BS in Fashion Merchandising and Consumer Studies that serves over 180 student majors. Both programs have active advisory boards and strong industry partnerships. The Department is highly regarded in the University for its teaching, service and research excellence. ECU is an emerging national research university with an enrollment of nearly 29,000 students. The University offers 87 bachelor's degree programs, 68 master's degree programs, 13 doctoral degree programs, and 89 departmental certificates. The University is comprised of 10 academic colleges/schools including a medical and dental school. The University is located in Greenville, N.C., a diverse and progressive city of approximately 90,000. It is within two hours driving distance of the Atlantic Coast to the east and the Research Triangle area of Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill to the west.

Job Duties The College of Health and Human Performance at East Carolina University seeks applications for the position of Chairperson of the Department of Interior Design and Merchandising. The Department Chair is a faculty appointment that includes teaching, research, and service (51%) with administrative duties (49%). As the unit administrator, the Department Chair is responsible for promoting quality instruction, mentoring and advocating for faculty and students within the department and fostering research productivity. As the unit administrator, the chair of IDMR reports directly to the Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance. Specifically, the duties of the Chair include but are not limited to:
  • Serve as the Department representative to the Dean and other Departments within the College, to the University and other units and Departments within the University as well as related agencies, organizations, and institutions.
  • Facilitating the development and attainment of departmental goals with a clear vision for the department's future.
  • Plan, administer, and manage the affairs and resources of the Department in accordance with the policies and procedures determined by the University, College, and Department.
  • Manage departmental operations including the departmental office staff; maintain personnel files, student files, and other administrative records.
  • Plans/negotiates the teaching schedule, teaching assignments, and faculty service loads.
  • Mentor and/or facilitate the professional development of all faculty in terms of teaching effectiveness, scholarship, and service.
  • Conduct annual performance evaluations of departmental faculty and staff.
  • Call and preside over departmental meetings.
  • Perform other organizational and administrative duties.

Minimum Education/Experience Candidates must possess a terminal degree in one of the department's program areas (Apparel and Textiles, Design and Applied Arts) or in a closely related field, such as, but not limited to Architecture, Environmental Design, Architectural Sciences and Technology, Interior Architecture, Family and Consumer Sciences/Human Sciences Business Service, Specialized Sales, Merchandising and Marketing Operations. Qualifying degrees must be conferred and received from appropriately accredited institutions. Excellent skills in management, fundraising, collaboration, interpersonal communication and growing industry partnerships are essential.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education Experience with accreditation and program administration is preferred. Knowledge of Interior Design and Merchandising curricula and studio pedagogy.
