The Clinical Diagnostics Division of Thermo Fisher Scientific is seeking a highly motivated, innovative and experienced organic/medicinal chemist to join the Research and Development (R&D) department at Fremont, California as a Staff Scientist / Senior Staff Scientist - Organic Chemistry - Immunoassay Development. CDD Fremont is a new 280,000 sq. ft. facility - an $85 million investment - that is a center of excellence for in vitro diagnostic medical device development, manufacture and commercialization in the heart of Silicon Valley. State-of-the-art laboratories are equipped with a broad array of HPLCs, mass specs and other analytical instrumentation. This position requires at least twenty percent (20%) time in the laboratory and the management of up to three organic chemists and/or immunoassay developers. You would be responsible for developing reagents to support R&D with activities in product development, product transfer and product improvement. The ideal candidate shall have wide range of specialized experimental techniques and skills in their application, exercise independent judgment in developing methods and techniques, strong capabilities of resolving issues in creative ways and advocating corrective action, excellent communication and interpersonal skills that cultivate collaborations for maximum efficiency. What will you do? * Design and synthesize haptens, immunogens, and protein conjugates for in vitro diagnostic medical device products, including drug derivatives, linker arms, and enzyme conjugates. * Haptens should result in antibodies with acceptable levels of sensitivity and specificity (cross-reactivity), per agreed upon feasibility specifications, design input requirements (DIRs) and/or other specifications. * Collaborate with internal and external antibody development groups. * Synthesize and purify compounds involving multistep synthesis from milligram- to multi-gram scale. * Plan and execute multiple reactions simultaneously. * Interpret and properly document results of various experiments and present the data at group meetings * Conduct, direct and troubleshoot potentially highly complex technical experiments to achieve department and company goals. * Perform other responsibilities to support the needs of the department as assigned. * Follow Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and good documentation practices including lab notebook, SOPs and other necessary documentation. * Comply with Design Controls, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) guidelines, which includes, for example, process validation. * Work independently with little supervision * Thorough documentation of experimental procedures - writing of reports and technical documents. * Achieve a high level of productivity in the laboratory setting, as well as being able to demonstrate the ability to resolve key project hurdles and assumptions by effectively using available information and technical expertise. * Maintain a safe, pleasant and efficient working environment. How will you get there? * MS (12+ years of experience) or a Ph.D. (8+ years of experience) in organic chemistry. * Requires in depth knowledge of synthesis and purification of organic reagents, chromatographic and spectroscopic analysis, documentation of results and procedures. * Must be able to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities with a multi-disciplinary team of scientists who need to communicate and cooperate to achieve maximum efficiency. * Excellent written and oral communication skills. * Excellent organization and strong project management skills. Preferred Experience: * Experience as a synthetic organic or medicinal chemist in an industrial laboratory is preferred. * Candidates must possess a strong background in the theory and practice of synthetic organic chemistry, possess excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrate a thorough understanding of synthetic methods and reaction mechanisms. * Must be able to independently prioritize own work assignments, and consistently demonstrate the ability to perform assigned tasks through rigorous data collection and applying analytical tests and instrumentation in the laboratory. * Must have expertise in the purification and characterization of organic compounds using applicable modern techniques. * Self-motivated, independent and a proactive driving force of efficient execution. * Capable of multi-tasking and changing priorities caused by time, markets, customers, budget or other constraints. * Proficient in the use of Excel, Powerpoint, ChemDraw and Scifinder. * Experienced with Waters HPLCs, UPLC/QDa mass spec systems Our global team of more than 80,000 colleagues delivers an unrivaled combination of innovative technologies, purchasing convenience and pharmaceutical services through our industry-leading brands, including Thermo Scientific, Applied Biosystems, Invitrogen, Fisher Scientific, Unity Lab Services and Patheon.
