The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at Central Michigan University invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in the broadly defined area of hydrometeorology beginning in August 2022. We seek a colleague who can work at the interface of the hydrosphere and atmosphere using a combination of field, laboratory, and/or quantitative methods. Areas of interest may include:
  • land-water-atmosphere interactions,
  • storage and exchange of energy, water, and natural or anthropogenic compounds,
  • the influence of hydrologic and atmospheric processes on ecological systems and climate,
  • surface hydrologic processes in unique environments such as urban areas, food producing areas, coastal areas, deserts, or mountains,
  • precipitation processes resulting in extreme hydrologic impacts, or
  • other interrelated phenomena.

The selected candidate will support the department's programs through engaging, student-centered teaching, develop an externally funded research program that involves students, and actively contribute to service initiatives that advance the department, college, and university.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in hydrology, meteorology, environmental science or a related field. In addition, candidates must demonstrate (1) strong oral and written communication skills, (2) the potential for outstanding teaching, (3) the potential to develop a vigorous research program that involves students and attracts external funding, and (4) the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have postdoctoral experience (academic or industry), a demonstrated record of receiving external funding, college-level instructional experience, and potential to collaborate with existing faculty.

About the Department

The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences is housed in the College of Science and Engineering. We offer B.S. degrees in Environmental Science, Meteorology, and Geology, and participate in an interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Earth and Ecosystems Science. The expertise of EAS faculty members spans the Earth sciences, including meteorology, ecohydrology, hydrogeology, environmental modeling, climatology, geophysics, and geochemistry. Faculty members have access to shared computing resources, state-of-the-art analytical instrumentation for analytical geochemistry, and in situ and remote meteorological sensors.
