Job Details

RAND Arroyo Center seeks an Associate Director. The Associate Director works with the Vice President of the Army Research Division/Director of RAND Arroyo Center to manage all aspects of the division.

This is a 5-year term position, renewable with approval by management, providing 50% coverage, with additional coverage provided for leading projects and special assignments within the division.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the Director to establish and achieve division goals.
  • Develop and maintain overall expertise and understanding of RAND Arroyo Center research, sufficient to represent the collective RAND Arroyo Center research to the Army and to lead special projects.
  • Represent RAND Arroyo Center internally and externally, in the absence of the Director.
  • Provide support and assistance to program directors, as necessary.
  • Oversee the RAND Arroyo Center Fellows program.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Provide division inputs into the performance review process.
  • Review and approve staff development requests.
  • Serve on internal task forces relevant to the division.
  • Update, maintain, and provide Arroyo Center introductory briefing to external and internal audiences.
  • Provide review for research and publications authored by the Director.
  • Provide backup to Director, Operations, as necessary.

 

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability to respond to the Army’s needs, including managing time-sensitive research and analysis. This includes the ability and willingness to travel as needed, including to the Pentagon, major U.S. and overseas installations, and occasionally units in the field.
  • Proven discretion and experience with challenging interpersonal situations that might include Army sponsors or RAND staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead key research efforts that the Army requests, including issues with broad scope, and on topics that may be new or not normally part of the Arroyo Center’s research portfolio.
  • The ability to link Arroyo Center research with other relevant divisions.

     

 

Education Requirements

Master's degree is required with a PhD preferred.

 

Experience

  • Experience equivalent to RAND senior-level researcher is desired (approximately 8+ years of experience conducting policy research at RAND or another institution).
  • Experience working in or with a federally funded research and development center (FFRDC) is preferred.

     

 

Security Clearance

Secret clearance is required; TS/SCI clearance is desirable.
