Are you an ambitious researcher looking for your next challenge?

Do you have an established background in structural biology OR cellular & molecular biology?

Do you want to further your career in one of the UKs leading research intensive Universities?

We have established a new paradigm that regulates the assembly of viral particles around ssRNA genomes, including para-retroviruses. RNA Packaging Signal (PS)-mediated Assembly requires cognate interactions to be formed between multiple RNA motifs/sequences across viral genomes (gRNAs). It ensures that genome packaging is specific, explaining the observed outcomes of natural infections. PSs are evolutionarily conserved between strain variants, including coronaviruses, making them excellent anti-viral drug targets. PS-coat contacts form and then mostly break during virion assembly, explaining infection directionality and resulting in particles poised to infect a new host. We are investigating fundamental and applied aspects of virology around this mechanism using a multidisciplinary team, embracing experiment and theory.

Two short-term Postdoctoral Fellowships are now available, until late Spring 2023, in Structural Virology, especially using modern cryo-electron microscopy, and in Cell and Molecular Virology, especially for in vitro & in vivo assembly studies. You should have a PhD (or close to completion) in structural biology, molecular genetics, cell & molecular biology, biochemistry or biophysics or a closely allied discipline. You should also have experience in appropriate technical skills and experience, such as the use of cryo-EM to determine molecular structures, or biophysical techniques to probe molecular interactions; or recombinant protein expression; cell biology for in vivo virological studies. Further grant funding has been sought so the post could be extended in future.

The University of Leeds and the Faculty of Biological Sciences are committed to providing equal opportunities for all and offer a range of family friendly policies. The University is a charter member of Athena SWAN (the national body that promotes gender equality in higher education), and the Faculty of Biological Sciences was awarded a Silver award in 2020. We are proud to be an inclusive Faculty that values all staff, and are happy to consider job share applications and requests for flexible working arrangements from our employees. Our Athena SWAN webpage provides more information.
