Position:
Under the general supervision of the Division Dean of Health Sciences, the Physical Therapist Assistant Program Director/Instructor's responsibilities include teaching, overseeing the PTA program curriculum, assisting in recruiting, developing, mentoring and assigning part-time instructors, and ensuring program compliance with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accreditation process/Annual Accreditation Report, and the overall quality of the program. The position may include teaching Kinesiology, Advanced Modalities, Physical Therapy Through the Life Span, Orthopedics, and Licensure Preparation courses, all current PTA course offerings, some of which may be in an online format. Other PTA courses may be developed in the future. Additional responsibilities will include oversight of the PTA Advisory Board, Faculty Chair of the PTA Club, and collaborating with the Director of Clinical Education. The PTA Program Director/Instructor may be expected to work in a classroom incorporating computer activities, as well as one with a traditional instructional format. Participation as a full-time faculty member in department, division and campus-wide activities is required. The PTA Program Director/Instructor may be required to have part of their teaching assignment in the evening and/or weekends and teach courses at the Fremont and/or Newark campuses, online via the eCampus and/or an off-campus location.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  1. Ensure program compliance with the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE) accreditation process/Annual Accreditation Report, and the overall quality of the program.
  2. The program director provides effective leadership for the program including, but not limited to, responsibility for communication with all stakeholders, program assessment and planning, program application and admissions policies and procedures, fiscal management, and faculty evaluation.
  3. Teach assigned courses in the PTA department, and employ learner-centered instructional methods that emphasize group cooperation and collaboration and that reflect cultural sensitivity and interdisciplinary approaches to subject matter.
  4. Teach PTA program curriculum in accordance with post-secondary level established course outlines.
  5. Coordinate student licensing and certification application process.
  6. Chair the PTA Advisory Board, serve as liaison between the program and other divisions on campus, external agencies in the community, and professional organizations (Physical Therapy Board of California and The American Physical Therapy Association).
  7. Faculty Chair of the PTA Club.
  8. Collaborate with the Director of Clinical Education.
  9. Understand the importance of holding oneself accountable as educators for closing equity gaps and engaging in equitable practices.
  10. Effectively engage and support historically minoritized groups by addressing issues of equity and improving culturally responsive service-oriented practices.
  11. Initiate and enhance institutional and teaching practices and aim to create a culturally responsive and equity driven teaching environment.
  12. Evaluate student work using clear criteria relevant to the course content and student learning outcomes and provide feedback to students in a timely manner.
  13. Assist students with their assignments by holding required office hours and attend department/division meetings.
  14. Develop and implement a variety of effective teaching and assessment methods including the use of computers and information technology to engage student interest and support for a variety of learning styles.
  15. Develop effective online course materials, and build online learning communities that meet accessible online course requirements and Title 5 §55211 Effective Contact Policy requirements.
  16. Participate in the leadership of discipline specific learning communities.
  17. Maintain and submit accurate records according to published deadlines (i.e., grades, syllabi, attendance reports).
  18. Participate in the development, implementation, evaluation, and revision of curriculum as well as assess student-learning outcomes at the course and program levels.
  19. Continue in related professional career development throughout employment and remain current in the field through course work, conferences, workshops and other appropriate means.
  20. Carry out collegial responsibilities including, but not limited to, institutional committee assignments, student recruitment and retention, and participation in shared governance and campus life activities.
  21. Teach through positive race-consciousness and embracing human difference.
  22. Strategically build support and participation among colleagues for equity-related initiatives.
  23. Create an equity based and welcoming classroom environment.
  24. Communicate and work cooperatively with colleagues (within discipline and college-wide) on matters regarding course offerings, programs, and activities that would enhance the development of the department and college.
  25. Perform duties described in Board policy, the Faculty Handbook, the United Faculty of Ohlone (faculty bargaining unit) contract, and as assigned at the Fremont and Newark campuses, online via the eCampus, and/or other designated locations.
  26. Perform other duties as assigned.
Desirable Qualifications:
  1. Prior experience as a leader in Physical Therapy Education which might include:
    • A vision for physical therapist assistant education;
    • Understanding of and experience with curriculum content, design, and evaluation;
    • Employing strategies to promote and support professional development;
    • Proven effective interpersonal and conflict management skills;
    • Abilities to facilitate change;
    • Negotiation skills (relative to planning, budgeting, funding, program faculty status, program status, employment and termination, space, and appropriate academic and professional benefits);
    • Effective experience in short and long-term planning;
    • Active service on behalf of physical therapist professional education, higher education, the larger community, and organizations related to their academic interest;
    • Effective management of human and fiscal resources;
    • Commitment to lifelong learning;
    • Active role in institutional governance; and
    • Program accomplishments - experience in outcome assessment with regards to evaluative performance standards.
  2. Teaching experience in physical therapy at the post-secondary level or clinically.
  3. Experience in using innovative teaching methods that encourage student engagement and learning.
  4. Experience creating socially conscious syllabi, equitable classroom materials and inclusive pedagogical practices to promote an inclusive environment.
  5. Experience and skill with addressing issues of equity; recent experience working with African American, Latinx, Native American, and other minoritized students and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusions of these groups in higher education shape patterns of participation and outcomes; willingness to examine and remediate one's relational practices to more effectively engage and support racially minoritized students; and a commitment to participatory governance, consensus building, and team approach to management.
  6. Experience in the use of computer technology as a teaching tool, including experience with course management systems (i.e. Canvas, EXXAT, Excel, etc.).
  7. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  8. Ability to work successfully in a team environment.
Minimum Qualifications:
The program director is a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant who demonstrates an understanding of education and contemporary clinical practice appropriate for leadership in physical therapist assistant education. These qualifications include all of the following:
  • is a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant who holds an active, unrestricted PT license or PTA license/certification in any United States jurisdiction and the state of California;
  • a minimum of a master's degree;
  • a minimum of five years (or equivalent), full-time, post licensure experience that includes a minimum of three years (or equivalent) of full-time clinical experience within any US jurisdiction;
  • didactic and/or clinical teaching experience;
  • experience in administration/management;
  • experience in educational theory and methodology, instructional design, student evaluation and outcome assessment, including the equivalent of nine credits of coursework in educational foundations, or previous CAPTE-granted exemption;
OR the equivalent;
AND Commitment to community college goals/objectives of being an equity-based and anti-racist institution, and providing quality programs and services for culturally, socio-economically, ethnically, and academically diverse students and students with disabilities; personal qualities to work effectively and with sensitivity in a multicultural environment; awareness of and commitment to the needs of non-traditional and/or re-entry students with diverse abilities and interests; AND Must have evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practices.

Medical: Enrollment in medical coverage through the District is optional. For faculty that choose to enroll in one of the offered medical plans, the District currently provides an allowance of $1,200 per month to offset the cost of the medical benefits premium.

Dental, Vision and Life Insurances: The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for you and your family for dental and vision, and the employee premium for life insurance. Enrollment in Dental, Vision and Life insurances are mandatory.

Long-term Disability (LTD) and Employee Assistance Program (EAP): The District provides for and fully pays the premiums for long-term disability for you and EAP for you and your family.

Retirement: Ohlone participates in the State Teachers' Retirement System (STRS) and the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Candidates hired on or after January 1, 2013 are subject to restrictions imposed by PEPRA.

Sick Leave: One day per month, accumulating indefinitely, if unused. All other Education Code leave benefits apply.

Sabbatical Leave: After 6 consecutive years of employment with the district you will be eligible for sabbatical leave. You will receive 100% pay for one semester leave and 70% for an academic year.

Enrollment Fee Waiver: Employees and their qualified dependents receive enrollment fee waiver for courses taken at Ohlone College.

Certificated employees belong to the United Faculty of Ohlone (UFO).
