Reporting to a/an Pro-Vice-Chancellor/Associate Vice-President, the Director will hold overall responsibility for the operational management of the University Safety Office/University Laboratory Safety Office, consisting of the following functional units: (i) Chemical Safety; (ii) Biological Safety; (iii) Radiation Safety; (iv) Construction and Engineering Safety; (v) Occupation Hygiene; (vi) Environmental Health; and (vii) Dangerous Goods Services. He/She will develop, implement and monitor campus environmental and safety programs and policies to ensure compliance with local environmental, health and safety regulations and international best practices. Other key duties include developing new programmes in response to changing regulations and ensure campus awareness of and compliance with all applicable rules and regulations; overseeing specialised technical programmes and serving as a campus expert with these fields; advising on laboratory designs from a health and safety perspective and carry out pre-occupation health and safety check for new laboratories; and scrutinise research proposals submitted by principal investigators and grant research safety approval.

Applicants should possess (i) a higher degree (Master's degree or above) in science or engineering; (ii) professional qualifications in workplace safety and health (e.g., RSO, RSA, CMIOSH, CSP or equivalent) or occupational hygiene (e.g., RPH, CIH, COH or equivalent) ; (iii) at least ten years of professional experience at management level in related sectors, including laboratory and research safety, Dangerous Goods management, construction safety, and environmental & occupational hygiene, etc.; (iv) track records of extensive practical experience in health and safety in tertiary/research institutes, or complex organisations; (v) sound knowledge of relevant statutory regulations and requirements; and (vi) a high level of writing and verbal communication, interpersonal and presentation skills. Full membership of relevant local or international professional bodies, such as HKIOEH, IOSH, AIHA, AIOH, BOHS, etc., is preferred.

Appointment to the Directorship will initially be made on contract basis for up to three years, renewable subject to mutual agreement. Applications will be accepted until the post is filled.
