Job Summary
The Central Washington University Department of Music seeks a highly energetic person for a tenure-track, Director of Choirs (Assistant Professor) position at Central Washington University. The ideal candidate will be an outstanding musician with a strong and effective commitment to music education, recruitment, and choral ensemble conducting; who demonstrates high potential for recruiting, building, and maintaining an outstanding program; and who will integrate with the faculty and staff of the vocal area. The Director of Choirs serves as music director and conductor of the Chamber Choir as well as administrative responsibility for all CWU Choral Ensembles (e.g., Vox Divina, University Chorale, Wildcat Chorus). Core duties will include teaching of conducting, choral methods, and leading the master's-level choral conducting program as well as establishing and maintaining active working relationships with state and regional instrumental teachers and K-12 choral directors. Faculty will integrate CWU's commitment to diversity and create a learning environment that is welcoming, accessible, and inclusive for all students.

Primary duties include administration of the choral area including Chamber Choir, Vox Divina, Wildcat Chorus, and University Chorale. Duties will also include teaching undergraduate conducting in conducting and choral music education, and other teaching responsibilities in areas of the successful candidate's experience.
  • Serve as advisor of the CWU's American Choral Directors Association Collegiate chapter
  • Active participation in state, regional and/or national music education associations
  • Develop and maintain relationships with local, state and regional music educators
  • Administration of the annual choral festival
  • Engage in scholarly activity as outlined in tenure and promotion guidelines
  • Responsible for active recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate music majors for the Department of Music
  • Serve on department, college and university committees as assigned

The primary professional responsibilities of tenured and tenure-track faculty members are teaching, scholarship, and service.

About the Department

The CWU Department of Music is dedicated to creating a positive, dynamic, and inclusive learning environment for an increasingly diverse student population comprised of future music educators, performers, and scholars. The Department of Music has an enrollment of nearly 400 music majors, 21 full-time faculty, 15 adjunct faculty and 6 staff. The department prides itself for producing outstanding performing ensembles, and for preparing its students to enter the music profession. The department is housed in one of the finest music facilities in the Pacific Northwest and is an NASM accredited program. The department offers bachelor's degrees in music education, performance and composition. It offers master's degrees in music education, composition, performance, pedagogy, and conducting. Minimum Qualifications
  • Terminal degree relevant for the discipline (ABD candidates may be considered, however, the terminal degree must be completed within one year of start date.)
  • DMA in Choral Conducting, DME in Choral Music Education, or PhD in related field
  • Evidence of excellence in teaching and/or conducting at the collegiate level
  • Demonstrated outstanding musicianship
  • Scholarship, research, teaching, service, or other experience that has prepared the candidate to contribute to CWU's commitment to the engagement and inclusion of culturally diverse students

Preferred Qualifications
  • Active participation in professional choral and music education organizations (e.g., America Choral Directors Association, National Association for Music Education, State Music Educators Associations)
  • A record of promoting inclusivity in classrooms and academic work environments
  • Experience teaching diverse curricular offerings in music education
  • Demonstrated participation in programs designed to promote diversity
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
Salary : Commensurate with education and experience

Appointment : Full-Time, Tenure-Track, 9 Month Appointment. Additional summer teaching may be available. Central Washington University is on the quarter system with appointments from mid-September through mid-June.
