Assistant Dean for Doctoral Training and Development

The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) at UT Health San Antonio invites applications for the position of Assistant Dean of Doctoral Training and Development. The GSBS is one of five schools at UT Health San Antonio, which is the premier academic research center in the seventh-largest city in the country and is a recognized Hispanic-serving Institution. UT Health San Antonio is the chief catalyst for San Antonio's thriving $40.2-billion-dollar health care and biosciences industry. The GSBS offers over twenty academic programs consisting of Certificate (4), MS (8), and Ph.D. (9) degrees. The GSBS has nearly 400 graduate students and over 600 graduate faculty members.

Position Summary:

The position requires at least 70% effort if there is a concurrent faculty appointment.

The Assistant Dean reports directly to the Dean of the GSBS and will assist in developing and maintaining a comprehensive and integrated suite of training grants and professional development offerings for graduate students while ensuring that these programs are highly visible and accessible to all.

The major responsibilities of the Assistant Dean of Doctoral Training and Development are:
  1. Oversee current GSBS NIH-funded training grants and programs as part of his/her portfolio.
  2. Work with principal investigators (PIs) in the development, submission, and if necessary, resubmission of extramurally funded training grants.
  3. Manage and expand a mentorship program that matches current graduate students with graduate alumni across all disciplines.
  4. Provide and analyze data for training grant application matrices.
  5. Participate in efforts to increase graduate support through training grants, individual fellowships, internships, and other relevant funding opportunities.
  6. Create and maintain data repositories for training grant documents and reports.
  7. Work closely with campus partners (e.g., the Dean, Associate/Assistant Deans, Directors) and collaborate broadly with faculty and institutional leaders to advance excellence in graduate education and to promote best practices in diversity and inclusion.
  8. Expand and manage initiatives and collaborations to enhance recruitment, career and professional development, and overall success of underrepresented graduate students.
  9. Serve as a mentor for a large cadre of underrepresented students.

Qualifications:
  1. A doctoral degree and background in biomedical science or a related field with ten years of relevant experience are preferred.
  2. Exhibit a proven track record of successful procurement of NIH funding, with training grant funding a plus.
  3. Demonstrated history of advancing programs and services which enhance institutional goals related to student access, equity, diversity, and engagement.
  4. Display exceptional relationship-building and communication skills to meaningfully connect with a wide range of constituents.
  5. Active participation and engagement with professional or scientific associations or meetings (e.g., ABRCMS and SACNAS) that aim to increase diversity or address the needs of underrepresented graduate students.
  6. A demonstrated ability to create new, cutting-edge initiatives that foster student success.
