Why Work At BNL?
Brookhaven National Laboratory delivers discovery science and transformative technology to power and secure the nation's future. Brookhaven Lab is a multidisciplinary laboratory with seven Nobel Prize-winning discoveries, 37 R&D 100 Awards, and more than 70 years of pioneering research. The Lab is primarily supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Science. Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA) operates and manages the Laboratory for DOE. BSA is a partnership between Battelle and The Research Foundation for the State University of New York on behalf of Stony Brook University.
Organizational Overview
The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II), a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory, is seeking exceptional candidates for a beamline scientist position within the Complex Scattering Program at NSLS-II to support operations and perform research at the Complex Materials Scattering (CMS) and Soft Matter Interfaces (SMI) beamlines. Based on a high-brightness undulator source, the SMI beamline enables the exploration of novel types of hierarchical ordering and heterogeneities in frontier materials by providing advanced x-ray scattering capabilities in tender and hard x-ray ranges, including grazing-incidence and transmission small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering [(GI)SAXS/WAXS], resonant scattering, and liquid-interface scattering. Based on a three-pole- wiggler source, the CMS beamline facilitates efficient exploration of complex materials in vast material parameter spaces by providing high-throughput and streamlined (GI)SAXS/WAXS capabilities. Through their complementary capabilities, the CMS and SMI beamlines enable state-of-the-art research for a user community with wide research interests covering both soft and hard materials and a variety of applications, including polymeric and nano-composite materials, liquid and solid interfaces, novel nanomaterials, complex fluids, liquid crystals, biomolecular materials, materials for energy conversion and storage, and in-situ studies during advanced manufacturing processes and mechanical testing
Position Description
Working together with beamline scientists, data analysis scientists, beamline technicians and engineers, and other support staff, the successful candidate will support the user program and beamline operations at the CMS and SMI beamlines. The candidate will also develop an independent science program and scientific collaborations, which intersect with the CMS and SMI capabilities.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities:
  • Support of the CMS and SMI beamlines: beamline development, operations, maintenance and troubleshooting, and user programs;
  • Development of an independent research program and technical capabilities/methodologies. This may benefit from internal and external scientific collaborations that leverage the unique capabilities of the beamlines;
  • Interact with the scientific user community and work with the Complex Scattering Program staff to help grow user programs for x-ray scattering and execute technical developments needed to facilitate the growth.

Position Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

  • PhD in materials science, physics, chemistry, or a related field
  • At least two (2) years of postdoctoral or equivalent experience associated with activities at synchrotron x-ray or neutron scattering beamlines
  • Experience with the collection and analysis of small- or wide-angle x-ray scattering data.
  • Experience and publication record in soft matter-related research using x-ray and/or neutron
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Ability to work effectively with a multidisciplinary team

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:
  • Demonstrated experience with grazing-incidence scattering (GISAXS/GIWAXS), x-ray reflectivity, and/or liquid-interface scattering
  • Demonstrated experience with in-situ studies of materials
  • Demonstrated experience with relevant scattering data analysis
  • Programming skills for data reduction and analysis in Python
  • Demonstrated experience with designing instruments or sample environments

Other Information:
The candidate will be placed at the appropriate scientific level dependent upon depth and breadth of relevant knowledge and skills the candidate brings to the position, as well as the amount of relevant experience.
