This role may or may not be extended past June 30th 2023 and is contingent upon both institutional need for support and strong employee performance. Your manager will work closely with you to develop your skills and if any future Relay opportunities interest you, you'd be encouraged to apply.

Location: Flexible within the US as classes will remain remote this academic year. However to best support our graduate students in NYC, it is strongly preferred that a candidate has familiarity teaching in NYC K-12 schools.

If you love coaching teachers, leading professional development, working on a team of experienced high-performing educators, and are hungry to further build your instructional leadership skillset, the Assistant Professor of Practice role is right for you. In this role, you'll be able to build relationships with graduate students and adapt our curriculum to meet their needs. Your responsibilities will be challenging and diverse.

During an average week, you can expect to spend your time doing thing such as preparing to teach, leading instruction evening classes, meeting in-person with graduate students that need extra help, observing graduate students in their K-12 classrooms, grading assessments, and working with your faculty team to improve your practice and advance Relay's initiatives.

To grow your own skills as a teacher coach and leader of adults, you will have the opportunity to participate in individual, team, and institution-wide professional development. You will also receive individualized coaching. We will support you in your development in the same way that you will support your graduate students.

As a result of these efforts, you'll benefit from seeing teachers that you work with grow and develop as people and professionals. Plus, you'll maximize your community impact by supporting teachers in generating significant, measurable student achievement gains in their K-12 classrooms.

WHAT YOU'LL TACKLE

Lead teach a cohort of graduate students:
  • Teach general pedagogy and/or content pedagogy curriculum to Relay graduate students
  • Teach a clinical supervision course (observation course)
  • Design and revise session plans, assessments, and supporting instructional materials to meet our vision for educational equity and culturally responsive teaching
  • Grade assessments, synthesize performance data, track cohort progress, and identify gaps in graduate student understanding and/or instructional practice and adjust instruction accordingly
  • Facilitate deliberate practice or clinical supervision groups for graduate students

Ensure graduate students' progress and success:
  • Serve as the primary academic advisor to graduate students, utilizing a culturally responsive approach to advisement
  • Serve as the primary support for graduate students, channeling only the most difficult questions to professors or deans
  • Provide high quality written and verbal feedback to graduate students on Relay assessments
  • Lead clinical supervision of graduate students in their K-12 classrooms (in Brooklyn, Manhattan, the Bronx, and Queens) to provide specific, actionable feedback around best teaching practices
  • Provide graduate students with additional classroom support and observations and supports as needed
  • Hold routine office hours to support graduate students at a time they can attend (e.g., after work hours)
  • Maintain accurate data of student progress to facilitate data-driven advisement and support
  • Ensuring graduate students have met certification requirements of New York State
  • Advise and provide necessary supports to complete New York State certification requirements in the timeline defined by campus leadership (this may include leading certification workshops)
  • Develop collaborative relationships with partner organizations and leaders of the schools in which enrolled graduate students work as full-time teachers to promote their success in the classroom and in our program

Other Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to the larger Relay NY team (e.g., participate in team meeting structures, committees, etc. (e.g., hiring committee, inquiry groups, dismissal appeal council, etc.)
  • Collaborate with the national team (e.g, professional development, manager meetings, faculty courses, community meeting, etc.)
  • Create and maintain a positive work environment and sense of community with all team members and graduate students
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

First and foremost, the Assistant Professor of Practice must share the Relay community's commitment to working together to improve student growth and achievement through phenomenal teacher and leader preparation & training grounded in diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism. Additionally, for this position we're looking for candidates that possess a combination of the following skills:
  • A master's or doctoral degree
  • At least five years of experience teaching in a school serving a high-needs community with demonstrated K-12 student achievement
  • At least two years of experience leading professional development sessions for teachers
  • At least two years of experience observing, coaching, and developing novice teachers
  • Ability to work efficiently and intensely within an entrepreneurial environment
  • A demonstrated passion for urban education and eliminating educational inequities
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

COMPENSATION

Relay's compensation philosophy is to pay competitively for the education nonprofit market and ensure equity across the institution. The salary range for this role is $75,000 to $95,000. Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors including their region's cost of labor, qualifications, skills, competencies and experience and may fall outside the range shown.

  • Faculty must have the ability to transport themselves to public schools across the city in order to conduct classroom observations.
  • As part of our hiring process, we ask for candidates' current manager as a final reference before an offer is extended.
