*Position Summary:*Reporting to the CNS Deputy Director, the Director of the Chemical and Biological Weapons Nonproliferation Program (CBWNP) is responsible for the day-to-day management of the CBWNP and supervision of the Program's staff and research assistants. As Senior Scientist, she/he develops and writes grant proposals and reports, conducts research projects, teaches lecture and seminar courses, and develops and conducts training activities. This is a full-time staff position.

The director will be expected to:
1) Direct and manage the general research and training activities of the Chemical and Biological Nonproliferation Program at the Center.
2) Conduct and publish significant research on issues related to CBW proliferation/terrorism and strategies for their control, and/or on global public health policy
3) Present CNS seminars in their area of specialization.
4) Teach and lecture in their area of specialization at the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey
5) Develop and secure new projects from multiple funders for the Chemical and Biological Nonproliferation Program
*Essential Functions:*• Conduct and lead research projects on chemical and biological nonproliferation and global health security and other related topics
• Publish articles and op-eds on nonproliferation and global health security issues.
• Give lectures on nonproliferation topics to MIIS students, visiting fellows, interns, and others.
• Assist with ongoing Center-wide projects on nonproliferation and global health security.
• Present research results at conferences and workshops.
• Perform fundraising duties.
• Manage and direct MIIS students, visiting fellows, interns, and other staff members conducting biological and chemical nonproliferation and global health security research.
*General Responsibilities:*• Manages the CBWNP, including supervising its staff members, graduate research assistants, and interns.
• Provides leadership for the CBWNP's unique research program.
• Generates original ideas that will constitute the basis for proposals for research projects pertaining to biological and chemical weapons, warfare, terrorism, and arms control. This includes public health research in-so-far that biological and chemical incidents can become public health emergencies or, even, disasters, necessitating a wide-ranging response by first responders, public health agencies, and recovery agencies.
• Writes grant proposals and leads fundraising efforts for the program.
• Provides expert assistance to ongoing or planned projects by other CNS programs that include CBW or public health components.
• Reviews research results and draft publications created by CBWNP staff members to make sure that they adhere to program goals and deadlines, and that their products are of high quality and accuracy.
• Offers lectures on CBW topics for visiting fellows, interns, and students.
• Offers one or more lecture or seminar courses per academic year to MIIS students.
• Liaises with professionals at the Monterey County Health Department and the California Department of Public Health in order to plan and conduct training exercises and develop preparedness and response plans to meet the challenges of future CBW emergencies.
• Publishes books, reports, articles, and op-eds on CBW arms control and proliferation issues.
• Presents research findings at international and domestic conferences and workshops.
*Education:*• Ph.D. or MD with 15 years of experience working the field of biological and chemical weapons nonproliferation and/or global health security issues
*Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:*• Deep knowledge of the biological and chemical sciences.
• Extensive research experience. .
• Possess strong organizational skills
• Ability to speak effectively about complex topics to both lay and expert audiences.
• Ability to work with others on demanding tasks and under severe time constraints.
• Readiness to incorporate new and evolving tools and technologies in research and teaching.
• Must have substantial publication record on chemical and biological nonproliferation issues and/or global health security issues
• Must have demonstrated experience in fundraising
• Must have demonstrated experience working with international partners
• Expertise in both science and policy issues, including familiarity with new disruptive technologies and their security implications
• Excellent English writing and communication skills
*Experience:*• At least 15 years of experience relevant to biological and chemical disciplines, arms control, nonproliferation, and global health security.
• Substantial experience with managing research teams.
• An excellent publication record.
• Knowledge of public health issues and global health security.
• Knowledge of a foreign language (desirable).
