Dean of Engaged Education

*Location:*
Clinton, NY
*Open Date:*
Apr 18, 2022
*Description:*
Hamilton College seeks a *Dean of Engaged Education* to lead a recently-established strategic initiative called ALEX (Advise, Learn, Experience: [https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/alex-advise-learn-experience](https://www.hamilton.edu/academics/alex-advise-learn-experience) ). ALEX supports students developmentally by focusing on co-curricular advising (in parallel with faculty academic advising), student learning and academic support, and high-impact educational experiences included under experiential learning. It consolidates academic student support in direct collaboration with professional staff in Student Affairs. The dean will continue the development of the strategic direction for ALEX; oversee programs and staff in advising, academic support centers, and experiential learning; better connect existing programs; and potentially develop new ones. This administrative dean and areas of oversight are located in Academic Affairs, with close connections to other divisions of the College, and reports to the Vice-President of Academic Affairs.
The dean's responsibilities include oversight of (a) the ALEX advisors, and the directors of health professions and fellowships advising; (b) directors of Hamilton's academic resource centers and programs, including Accessibility Services, the Writing Center and the Oral Communication Center (who share responsibility for multi-lingual student support), the Quantitative and Symbolic Reasoning Center, the Language Center, and Higher Education Opportunity Programs; and (c) experiential learning programs and directors, including the Levitt Center, Community Outreach Opportunity Programs, Off-Campus Study, summer research/creative opportunities, and academic internships. After the first year, the dean will have the opportunity to teach practica supporting experiential learning, and (potentially) a first-year course in a liberal arts subject.
The dean will have overall responsibility for the continued development, implementation, hiring for, and assessment of ALEX, as well as for the leadership, supervision, and professional development of advising, experiential learning, and learning support staff. Anticipated start date is July 1, 2022.
