Job Description
Primary Objective: Responsible for the facilitation of the GED preparatory and academic pathways associated with Diploma attainment. Provide quality education case management services to at-risk youth ages 16 to 24. Develop and positively execute action plans with participants that include GED attainment, credentials, and post-secondary placement.

Essential Job Functions
  • Adheres to the mission, passion, vision and core values of Central States SER.
  • Maintains caseload of youth in GED classroom training.
  • Implements procedures and policies for operation of the Accelerated GED Program.
  • Plans, organizes, and leads groups of youth in GED preparatory, program lessons and associated activities.
  • Develops lesson plans/curriculum, which demonstrates and instructs youth in obtaining their GED credential.
  • Uses resources to develop activities for weekly GED lesson plans.
  • Provide intensive GED preparation including one-on-one instruction, group GED classes, material review to work towards achieving the GED certification.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of the GED certification exam requirements, processes, procedures and study materials.
  • Maintains attendance and all other required records needed for program administration.
  • Must be willing and able to accompany and supervise youth on outings and fund raising events. This includes organizing, planning and escorting youth on college tours, and any other educational field trips.
  • Builds partnerships with area schools/principals and works with schools regarding recruitment efforts for the program.
  • Work with local high schools to develop a plan for credit recovery and facilitate relationship between school and youth participant.
  • Evaluates transcripts and creates course schedule for each youth in accordance to their academic needs.
  • Completes the intake process for each youth, including the Alternative Education Plans (AEP).
  • Builds and maintains a file for each youth that documents all coursework and program paperwork.
  • Prepare monthly progress reports for each student to gauge performance goals.
  • Performs home visits when necessary.
  • Supports Program Coordinator by selective duties pertaining to program development and advocacy.
  • Follows all safety measures with youth.
  • Responsible for communicating discipline issues with youth to Program Coordinator.
  • Provides choices for youth and guides them in making positive decisions.
  • Must be active and involved with all youth in the program.
  • Maintains working knowledge of all program statements of work and performance goals.
  • Collects data and information for periodic program evaluations.
  • Assists in evaluating current procedures and practices for accomplishing objectives. Implements alternative methods for improvement of program.
  • Maintains knowledge in current field by attending seminars, workshops and in-service trainings for self-improvement and growth.
  • Maintain communication and positive working relationships with team members.
  • Must be willing to work occasional evening and weekend hours to assist youth with assigned homework and provide tutoring as needed.
  • Provide remediation skills training to youth who are in need of upgrading literacy and numeracy skills through additional tutoring.
  • Assist youth in identifying, understanding and enrolling into post-secondary school and vocational training.
  • Work collaboratively with Employment Specialist and Career Coaches in the success of programming and the continued success of participants.
  • Provide crisis intervention and referral services as necessary.
  • Participate in community events and activities to market and support initiatives.
  • Attends all staff meetings.
  • Refer client to internal and external community services or resources
  • Perform all other business, educational and community service duties as assigned by Program Coordinator.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in Education preferred.
  • Experience in facilitating large classes, or experience working with youth.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Proficiency in all subjects-up to the 12th grade level.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Bilingual/bicultural (Spanish) preferred.
  • Access to a vehicle, must have a valid Illinois Driver's License and adequate vehicle insurance coverage.
  • Willingness to travel and work flexible hours required.


Skills/Abilities: Ability to establish rapport with, and motivate disadvantaged and at risk youth to participate in academic work activities. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team. Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to organize and prioritize tasks. Excellent keyboarding skills with good accuracy. Computer literacy and comfort working in a variety of internet based systems. Basic knowledge and working skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint. Ability to work in a professional environment. Knowledge of Youth Development practices.
