Job Description
*University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is currently seeking multiple Laboratory Research Assistant to join the Center for Biomedical Engineering and Technology (BioMET).* BioMET is an organized research center under the University of Maryland School of Medicine. It is composed of biomedical scientists with expertise in medicine, molecular and cell biology, optics, applied physics, engineering, and biochemistry who investigate basic and applied problems in medicine. The selected candidate will assist in research on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the progressive blindness associated with age-related macular degeneration. *UMB was ranked one of America's Best Large Employers by Forbes Magazine (Feb 2021).* *BENEFITS:*This EXEMPT position offers a generous benefits package that includes 22 vacation days, 15 floating and holidays, 15 sick days; comprehensive health insurance and retirement options; and tuition remission for employees and their dependents at any of the University System of Maryland schools. *UMB requires all faculty, staff, and students to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Exemptions for medical or religious reasons will be processed through Human Resources. * *ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS:*1. Perform routine molecular genetic procedures such as gene cloning, gene modifications, including CRISPR mediated gene editing, PCR, restriction enzyme digestions, gel electrophoresis, blotting, and DNA extractions.

2. Prepare chemical solutions, media, reagents, stains, and buffers.

3. Assist in conducting research on current scientific literature using computerized applications.

4. Collect, record, and maintain research data.

5. Perform general housekeeping of laboratory, and operation of laboratory equipment such as centrifuges, microscopes, incubators, and autoclaves.

6. Maintain chemicals and equipment inventory.

Qualifications
*EDUCATION:* Bachelor's degree in a biological or chemical science.

*REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:*
General knowledge of the principles and practices of natural and/or chemical sciences; of the safe and proper handling and disposal of applicable specimens, materials and equipment. Ability to perform laboratory procedures using applicable equipment and techniques; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to use computers and related software applications; to lift, transport and deliver materials and stock laboratory supplies and goods; to wear and work in personal protective equipment. *Hiring Range:* Commensurate with education and experience (Low to mid $40K) UMB is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
